Book Description
Excerpt from A Full and Detailed History of the Siege of Vicksburg The author claims the right of knowing as much about the siege of Vicksburg as any one residing in that town, from the fact that he was at that point, in Company A, Withers' Light Artillery, as a private, when the first gun was fired in its defense, and served as such until the raising of the first siege. In September, 1862, he was discharged from the army on account of sickness, and being unable to return to his home, (new Orleans) obtained a position in the office of the Vicksburg Whig, where he remained until its destruction by fire in the early part of May, 1863, and was taken prisoner and paroled after the surrender. Book Description
Excerpt from The Vicksburg Campaign, and the Battles About Chattanooga Under the Command of General U. S. Grant: In 1862-63; An Historical Review Of heroic histories of generals of the great Civil War, written to show that the Nation was saved by a phenomenal military genius, there are enough. Enough of egoizing military biographies, brazenly self exalting, and derogating from officers of better service, who are kept silent by army subordination, or are silent in the grave. Enough of military lives written for political campaign lives, with the superlative rodomontade of such party literature. Enough of hero-worshiping myth which slights the heroic army. It is time to lift the history of the great war out of the degradation of selfish prescription; of menial body service; of timeserving party necessity; of the fungus of popular myth, up to the plane of independence and true criticism. It is time for real history to be written, to do justice to the patriotic volunteers, the best soldiers in the world, who, without the leading of a great military genius, and notwithstanding the leading of great military blunders, which multiplied their hardships and slaughter, and prolonged the war, fought it through with indomitable resolution, to the dearly earned triumph of the Nation. In this aim is this review written. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
