Book Description
Excerpt from A Free Catholic Church It may also be permissible to refer to Father Tyrrell's Muelz-aeured Letter, which opportunely gives us a revealing glimpse into the nobler mind of Romanism. To read this remarkable epistle is, in more senses than one, a liberal education. It must, however, be studied carefully in the context of such reservations and explanations as are now offered by the writer of it in his own authorised publication. Book Description
Excerpt from A Catholic We can all do something either with the tongue or pen; God demands it and the government expects it. Let us look around us, and we shall see that there are those in our midst who are continually trying to destroy our faith in God, as well as in all the free institutions of our country. We hear a great deal said in our day about which is the true church; now, there is only one church, and that is the church of Jesus Christ. This church was established by him. Now, Christ has assured this church that the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Now, we do not believe that this is the church of Rome. We believe it is the true, non-sectarian Catholic church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Catholic Principles There is something about the Church, the genius of its system, the enthusiasm Of its de fenders, the spirit which animates it, the self assertive way it teaches, the development Of its work and worship on lines, and in directions, with which Protestants are not familiar, for which' the logic Of neither Protestants nor Romanists can account; and which therefore challenges their at tention and their criticism. Book Description
Excerpt from The Holy Catholic Church: The Communion of Saints; A Study in the Apostles Creed This book contains the substance of courses of lectures given at Cambridge in 1913-14 to classes consisting chiefly of candidates for the ministry of the Church of England. There are few questions of more practical impor tance to Christian people, whether clergy or laity, than those which are raised by a study of the character, the work, and the functions of the Catholic Church. Upon the answer which we give to those questions depends our attitude, as individuals, towards the great society of which we are members. It determines for each of us whether he shall march in the war against sin and unbelief as a soldier in the army of Christ, under the command of its officers, conscious of the honour and the joy of serving in the ranks of a trained and disciplined force; or as an irresponsible adventurer, brave and loyal at heart, but a member of an irregular company, which follows no leaders but such as are chosen by itself. Book Description
Excerpt from The Catholic Church Alone, the One True Church of Christ: Sumptuously Illustrated With Famous Paintings by the Great Masters Now, if we see such perverse zeal in the ministers of Satan to spread, by all possible means, their doctrines, with what zeal should not Christians, and especially Christian Pastors, be moved to make known the Gospel truths, and repeat them in season and out of season, regardless of fastidious minds which are displeased when a priest repeats a thing and goes over old, but necessary ground again. What, exclaims St. Francis dc Sales, what, is it not necessary, in working iron, to heat it over and over again, and in painting to touch and retouch the canvas repeatedly? How much more necessary is it to repeat the same thing again and again, in order to imprint eternal truths on hardened intellects, and on hearts confirmed in evil: St. John, the Baptist, and the Apostle St. Paul spoke from their prison walls; St. Peter spoke freely and forcibly before the ancients, saying that it is better to obey God than men; and the Apostle St. Andrew spoke from the wood of the cross. When in Japan, St. Francis Xavier climbed mountains, and exposed himself to innumerable dangers, to seek out those wretched barbarians in the caverns where they dwelt like wild beasts, and to instruct them in the truths of salvation. St. Francis de Sales, in the hope of converting the heretics of the province of Chablais, risked his life by crossing a river every day for a year, on his hands and knees, upon a frozen beam, that he might reach and preach to those stubborn men. St. Fidelis, in order to bring the heretic of a certain place back to God, cheerfully offered up his life for their salvation.
