Book Description
A sweeping and absorbing biography of Brazil, from the sixteenth century to the present For many Americans, Brazil is a land of contradictions: vast natural resources and entrenched corruption; extraordinary wealth and grinding poverty; beautiful beaches and violence-torn favelas. Brazil occupies a vivid place in the American imagination, and yet it remains largely unknown. In an extraordinary journey that spans five hundred years, from European colonization to the 2016 Summer Olympics, Lilia M. Schwarcz and Heloisa M. Starling’s Brazil offers a rich, dramatic history of this complex country. The authors not only reconstruct the epic story of the nation but follow the shifting byways of food, art, and popular culture; the plights of minorities; and the ups and downs of economic cycles. Drawing on a range of original scholarship in history, anthropology, political science, and economics, Schwarcz and Starling reveal a long process of unfinished social, political, and economic progress and struggle, a story in which the troubled legacy of the mixing of races and postcolonial political dysfunction persist to this day.

Book Description
During the past 30 years, the Study Group for the Problems of Osteosyn thesis (AO) has made decisive contributions to the development of osteo synthesis as a surgical method. Through close cooperation among special ists in the fields of orthopedic and general surgery, basis research, metallurgy, and technical engineering, with consistently thorough follow up, it was possible to establish a solid scientific background for osteosyn thesis and to standardize this operative method, not only for the more ob vious applications in fracture treatment, but also in selective orthopedics where hardly any problems relating to bone, such as those with osteoto mies can be solved without surgical stabilization. Besides the objective aim, the AO was additionally stimulated by a spirit of open-minded friendship; each member of the group was recruited according to his pro fessional background and position, his skills, and his talent for improvisa tion. Against this backdrop without even mentioning the schooling program well known throughout the world I should like to add some personal and general comments. This book is written for clinicians, instructing them how to perform osteo synthesis with special reference to plating in all its varieties and in strict accordance with the biomechanical and biological aspects and facts. From this point of view, the chapter on preoperative planning merits par ticular emphasis. Not only is it conductive to optimal surgery, it will also contribute to self-education and may found a school.

The books in the Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series demonstrate the University Press of Florida’s long history of publishing Latin American and Caribbean studies titles that connect in and through Florida, highlighting the connections between the Sunshine State and its neighboring islands. Books in this series show how early explorers found and settled Florida and the Caribbean. They tell the tales of early pioneers, both foreign and domestic. They examine topics critical to the area such as travel, migration, economic opportunity, and tourism. They look at the growth of Florida and the Caribbean and the attendant pressures on the environment, culture, urban development, and the movement of peoples, both forced and voluntary. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series gathers the rich data available in these architectural, archaeological, cultural, and historical works, as well as the travelogues and naturalists’ sketches of the area in prior to the twentieth century, making it accessible for scholars and the general public alike. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, under the Humanities Open Books program.

Book Description
Thirty-five years ago, the four authors of this book addressed the problem of validity in social science research. This revised edition builds on the earlier version's drive to justify novel techniques of survey and archival research. Richly illustrated throughout, the purpose of this book is to authorize and motivate ingenuity in obtaining information. The authors combine very different methods so that research results can withstand the 'threats to validity' which so frequently invalidate single-measure, conventional research.

Book Description
A concise and comprehensive guide to the ever-growing world of new media and new technology, as well as a sourcebook for teachers seeking to harness these resources and bring them into the classroom. From CD-ROMs to the Internet to graphic design programs, the vast array of new media products and information available to the average person can be overwhelming and confusing. As media increasingly enter the classroom, teachers are expected to help their students develop a set of critical skills that enable them to use and analyze media products for a variety of purposes: to understand, inform, persuade, and tell stories. But what to use, and where to begin? Even if teachers have access to these materials, they are often at a loss as to how to make them a valuable part of their students' learning experiences. The New Media Literacy Handbook is an invaluable resource for educators seeking information on, and guidance in, navigating through the vast new media landscape. The book has been designed to help teachers develop their own visual literacy skills, become more sophisticated and reflective users of media in the classroom and in general, and develop evaluation criteria for media products. In addition to their overview and evaluation guide, the authors provide information on how new media can be used in several academic disciplines--language arts, history, science, and art--and specific products and Web sites to explore. Clearly written, with helpful exercises for teachers included in each chapter, The New Media Literacy Handbook is an essential tool for today's educators.
