Multiphase Flow Measurement Based on Conventional Flowmeters Using Signal Analysis

Pages : 416
Book Description
Multiphase flow measurement has become an important topic for research due to the needs of users in various applications. Present systems are seen to have limitations in their measurement accuracy. This research presents a new approach to multiphase flow measurement by using signal analysis techniques to recover additional information from the unconditioned signals from conventional single-phase flowmeters. High frequency fluctuations embedded in sensor signals, which are treated as "noise" in conventional techniques of measurement, are extracted and analysed. The raw signals from different flowmeters are conditioned to obtain the high frequency signal components, and subjected to signal analysis using mainly the Fourier transform and power spectrum density function. The system uses electronic circuits for data acquisition, signal conditioning, and data processing. Neural networks are employed to yield the measurement information. Statistical parameters and extracted features from the high frequency signal are used as inputs to the neural networks. The outputs from the networks give separate values for the air and water flow rates within the two-phase flow without additional measurement from other instruments. Four different types of flowmeter, namely the orifice plate/differential pressure flowmeter, the electromagnetic flowmeter, the turbine flowmeter, and the vortex flowmeter were tested under two-phase flow conditions (air in water) in a laboratory flow rig at low pressure (less than 2.5 bar). A density meter based on a resonant sensor was also included in the tests. The results from neural networks show excellent ability at estimating and predicting individual phase flow rates in two-phase flow. The major advantage of this approach is that it uses the raw signal from the conventional sensors of standard flowmeters to implement the measurement, without needing further measurements from other sensors. Moreover, test laboratory results show that measurement accuracy to within ±2% is possible, especially using the vortex flowmeter.

Modelling and Experimentation in Two-Phase Flow
Author: Volfango Bertola
Publisher: CISM International Centre for Mechanical Sciences
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 450
Book Description
This is an up-to-date review of recent advances in the study of two-phase flows, with focus on gas-liquid flows, liquid-liquid flows, and particle transport in turbulent flows. The book is divided into several chapters, which after introducing basic concepts lead the reader through a more complex treatment of the subjects. The reader will find an extensive review of both the older and the more recent literature, with abundance of formulas, correlations, graphs and tables. A comprehensive (though non exhaustive) list of bibliographic references is provided at the end of each chapter. The volume is especially indicated for researchers who would like to carry out experimental, theoretical or computational work on two-phase flows, as well as for professionals who wish to learn more about this topic.
