Book Description
Excerpt from A Dissertation on the History and Development of the English Verb The prizes consisted of certain valuable publications of the Society. But one subject was given to the classes - The History and Development of the English Verb - and the first prize was awarded, without a question as to its superior merit, to the author of this Dissertation; and it was on my testi mony to its value as a contribution to the study of the English language, that his friend, Dr. J. C. Rodrigues, editor of O Novo Mundo, in new-york City, to whom he is indebted for his education at The Cornell University, generously offered to print it at his own expense. It may not be considered out of place to state, that Mr. Schwerdtfeger entered the University at the beginning of the winter term of 1873-74, he not being of the required age, six teen years, to enter at the beginning of the year. His studies in English philology have all been pursued since his admis sion to the University. He learned, during the winter term, to read the anglo-saxon with perfect ease, and in addition to what was read in class, during the winter and spring terms. Book Description
A journey through linguistic time and space, from Aristotle through the twentieth century's “era of syntax,” in search of a dangerous verb and its significance. Beginning with the early works of Aristotle, the interpretation of the verb to be runs through Western linguistic thought like Ariadne's thread. As it unravels, it becomes intertwined with philosophy, metaphysics, logic, and even with mathematics—so much so that Bertrand Russell showed no hesitation in proclaiming that the verb to be was a disgrace to the human race. With the conviction that this verb penetrates modern linguistic thinking, creating scandal in its wake and, like a Trojan horse of linguistics, introducing disruptive elements that lead us to rethink radically the most basic structure of human language—the sentence—Andrea Moro reconstructs this history. From classical Greece to the dueling masters of medieval logic through the revolutionary geniuses from the seventeenth century to the Enlightenment, and finally to the twentieth century—when linguistics became a driving force and model for neuroscience—the plot unfolds like a detective story, culminating in the discovery of a formula that solves the problem even as it raises new questions—about language, evolution, and the nature and structure of the human mind. While Moro never resorts to easy shortcuts, A Brief History of the Verb To Be isn't burdened with inaccessible formulas and always refers to the broader picture of mind and language. In this way it serves as an engaging introduction to a new field of cutting-edge research.

Book Description
Thinking English Grammar. To Honour Xavier Dekeyser, Professor Emeritus contains papers by 34 colleagues of professor Dekeyser on subjects that have interested him throughout his career. His research has mainly been devoted to the history of English, and it is only natural that the first and longest section should consist of 11 papers on variation in English, both diachronic and synchronic. The second, barely shorter with its 9 papers, is devoted to the description of various aspects of modern English; some of these papers shade off into theoretical linguistics. Professor Dekeyser having obtained his Ph.D. on grammaticography, there is a third section on "Grammar from the Past", with 5 papers. The final section, 9 papers on "Language Teaching and Contrast", honours the eminent teacher of literally thousands of budding anglicists.
