Book Description
Excerpt from A Diary of Two Parliaments These Volumes are literally, as they profess to be, a Diary of events passing under the eye of an observer. The record was penned often within an hour of the event. Some portions of it were actually printed in the "Daily News" of the following morning, and others within the current week in the "World" or the "Observer." Thus vividness of impression is fully retained, though sometimes it is to be feared at the cost of accuracy of judgment. It would be more agreeable to modify some of the personal characterisations of public men; but wherein they are faulty they stand corrected by further development of the personages sketched. They were jotted down honestly, without favour or prejudice, and, balancing considerations, it has been thought better to let them stand precisely as they were written. Book Description
Excerpt from Diary Two Parliaments: The Gladstone Parliament, 1880-1885 It had been my intention to continue this record through succeeding Parliaments; but circumstances have arisen which preclude the carrying out of that plan, and The Diary of Two Parliaments will remain a fragment in strict conformity with its title. I am fully sensible of the good fortune which has attended me in having two such momentous and distinctive those that will, through all history, be associated with the names of Mr. Disraeli and Mr. Gladstone. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes From a Diary, Vol. 1 of 2: 1851-1872 It will be Observed that I have said very little about the House of Commons, although fifteen of the years included in the portion of my notes now published were passed in that Assembly. I have done so for three reasons first, because I wished to make these pages as light as possible secondly, because I was anxious to leave behind me one of the most good natured books of its kind ever printed, and I apprehend that for a politician to write truth fully of the political struggles in which he has been engaged, without paying to some of the combatants the genuine tribute of undis sembled horror, would be a hopeless enter prise thirdly, because I had, during these fifteen years, frequent opportunities Of stating my views upon all public matters, in Parliament and out of it, opportunities of which I availed myself pretty freely. Book Description
Excerpt from The Balfourian Parliament, 1900-1905, Vol. 1 Opportunity of describing personal incidents and dramatic scenes failing, the student of Parliamentary history and manners may find some interest in trac ing the course of events consequent on Mr. Chamber lain's departure on his Fiscal Campaign in May 1903. Such value as the story may have is mainly based on the fact that it is related without political bias. This is the sixth volume of a Diary dating back to the Opening of the Parliament which in 1874 found Disraeli in power as well as in office. The series com pletes the narrative of an eye-witness, who has had the rare advantage of being present (with the exception of two Sessions) at every sitting of Parliament through thirty-one epoch-making years. Book Description
Excerpt from The Diary of Samuel Pepys, M. A., F. R. S., Clerk of the Arts and Secretary of the Admiralty, Vol. 15: May 1, 1668 Nov. 5, 1668 1 The dispute here alluded to had its origin in a petition against the East India Company, presented to the Peers by Thomas Skinner, a mer chant, which led to the memorable quarrel between the two Houses of Parliament upon a question of privilege. The particulars of the case are detailed in Lingard's History of England, vol. Xii., p. 234, fourth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes From a Diary, Vol. 2 of 2: 1892-1895 3. At a house where I was calling to-day, people talked of some absurd schoolboy answers which appeared in the Spectator, and several of which looked as if they had been happily invented. The Dean of Christ Church said: "I should have set down the one I am going to quote as happily invented, if I had not known the man to whom it was actually shown up." Question: "Enumerate the principal battles between Marston Moor and Naseby." Answer: "General Marston Moor and General Naseby repeatedly encountered each other; but at last General Naseby defeated his opponent in a great battle, and Marston Moor was left dead upon the field." 6. At Heath Court, Coleridge's Devonshire home, we spoke of Thirlwall. After his great speech in the House of Lords on the Irish Church, which had been preceded by a good deal of exertion, Coleridge said to him: "It must have been very hard work." Book Description
Excerpt from Diary and Correspondence of Samuel Pepys, F. R. S, Vol. 2 of 4: The Diary Deciphered by Rev. J. Smith, A. M. From the Original Shorthand Ms. June et. The Duke having been a hunting to-day, and so lately come home and gone to bed, we could not see him, and we walked away. And I with Sir J. Minnes to the Strand May-pole 1 and there light out of his coach, and walked to the New Theatre,2 which, since the King's players are gone to the Royal one, is this day begun to be employed by the fencers to play prizes at. And here I come and saw the first prize I ever saw in my life: and it was between one Mathews, who did heat at all weapons, and one Westwicke, who was soundly out several times both in the head and legs, that he was all over blood: and other deadly blows they did give and take in very good earnest, till Westwicke was in a sad pickle. They fought at eight weapons, three boutes at each weapon. This being upon a private quarrel, they did it in good earnest; and I felt one of their swords, and found it to be very little, if at all. Blunter on the edge than the common swords are. Strange to see what a deal of money is flung to them both upon the stage between every boute. So, well pleased for once with this sight, I walked home. This day I hear at Court of the great plot which was lately discovered in Ireland, made among the Presbyters and others, designing to cry up the Covenant. Book Description
Excerpt from Diary, Vol. 2: From November 18, 1862, to October 18, 1863 November 18. - In the street a soldier offered to sell me the pay already several months overdue to him. As I could not help him, as gladly I would have done, being poor, he sold it to a curb-stone broker, a street note-shaver. I need not say that the poor soldier sustained a loss of twenty-five percent, by the operation! He wanted to send the money home to his poor wife and children; yet one fourth of it was thus given into the hands of a stay-at-home speculator. Alas, for me! I could not save the poor fellow from the remorseless shaver, but I could and did join him in a very energetic cursing of Chase, that at once pompous and passive patriot.
