A Protest Against Law Taxes
Author: Jeremy Bentham
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3640245881
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 62
Book Description
Classic from the year 2009 in the subject Philosophy - Philosophy of the 17th and 18th Centuries, - entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Taxes on law-proceedings constitute in many, and perhaps in all nations, a part of the resources of the state. They do so in Great Britain: they do so in Ireland. In Great Britain, an extension of them is to be found among the latest productions of the budget: in Ireland, a further extension of them is among the measures of the day. It is this impending extension that calls forth the publication of the present sheets, the substance of which has lain upon the shelf these many years. It is a well-known parliamentary saying, that he who reprobates a tax ought to have a better in his hand.1 A juster condition never was imposed. I fulfil it at the first word. My better tax is-any other that can be named. The people, when considered with a view to the manner in which they are affected by a tax of this description, may be distinguished into two classes: those who in each instance of requisition have wherewithal to pay, and those who have not: to the former, we shall find it more grievous than any other kind of tax, to the latter a still more cruel grievance. Taxes on consumption cannot fall but where there is some fund to pay them: of poll taxes, and taxes on unproductive property, the great imperfection is, that they may chance to bear where such ability may be wanting. ...]

Jeremy Bentham's Economic Writings
Author: Werner Stark
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317657373
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 471
Book Description
This volume contains all the writings that are grouped around Bentham's boldest idea - the proposal of a 'circulating currency': a government sponsored currency which would be both a kind of savings certificate and a kind of paper money. The roots of this proposal are illustrated in two pamphlets from 1794-96, along with subsequent pamphlets and discussions which show Bentham's unsuccessful negotiations with the trasury on this matter.

The Philosophy of Debt
Author: Alexander X. Douglas
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317398866
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 180
Book Description
I owe you a dinner invitation, you owe ten years on your mortgage, and the government owes billions. We speak confidently about these cases of debt, but is that concept clear in its meaning? This book aims to clarify the concept of debt so we can find better answers to important moral and political questions. This book seeks to accomplish two things. The first is to clarify the concept of debt by examining how the word is used in language. The second is to develop a general, principled account of how debts generate genuine obligations. This allows us to avoid settling each case by a bare appeal to moral intuitions, which is what we seem to currently do. It requires a close examination of many institutions, e.g. money, contract law, profit-driven finance, government fiscal operations, and central banking. To properly understand the moral and political nature of debt, we must understand how these institutions have worked, how they do work, and how they might be made to work. There have been many excellent anthropological and sociological studies of debt and its related institutions. Philosophy can contribute to the emerging discussion and help us to keep our language precise and to identify the implicit principles contained in our intuitions.

Adam Smith's Lost Legacy
Author: G. Kennedy
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 0230511198
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 298
Book Description
In this accessible book, Gavin Kennedy takes a fresh look at Adam Smith's moral philosophy and its links to his political economy and his lectures on Jurisprudence. The book provides a new analysis of Wealth of Nations , and argues that Adam Smith's intellectual legacy was completely transformed in the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries by economists pursuing different agendas, to create ideas and policies that Smith did not advocate. It also provides a new explanation for the main mysteries about Smith's later life.
