Book Description
Excerpt from A Daughter of the Tenements The men about town had those four squads of four named, not prettily: the Shorts, Longs, Thins, and Plumps. The Longs came down the stage last, and, when they started, the orchestra leader waved more brass into the music, and the audience cheered louder than ever; for the four strapping big girls marched down with such a swing, with such an all conquering swagger, that it was delightfully exciting. Well, then, Teresa was the tallest of the Longs, the one on the right of the line, to the left as you looked. She was also, you recollect, now that I have identified her, the prettiest in the company, as well as the most graceful dancer, excepting the premiere. Book Description
Excerpt from Children of the Tenements Of the writer by stringing facts together to suit my own fancy. But none of the stories are invented. Nine out of ten of them are just as they came to me fresh from the life of the people, faithfully to portray which should, after all, be the aim of all fiction, as it must be its sufficient reward. Book Description
A New York Times Notable Book of 2017! Here is New York, as you've never seen it before. A perfectly charming, sidesplittingly funny, intellectually entertaining illustrated history of the blocks, the buildings, and the guts of New York City, based on Julia Wertz's popular illustrated columns in The New Yorker and Harper's. In Tenements, Towers & Trash, Julia Wertz takes us behind the New York that you think you know. Not the tourist's New York-the Statue of Liberty makes a brief appearance and the Empire State Building not at all-but the guts, the underbelly, of this city that never sleeps. With drawings and comics in her signature style, Wertz regales us with streetscapes "Then and Now" and little-known tales, such as the lost history of Kim's Video, the complicated and unresolved business of Ray's Pizza, the vintage trash and horse bones that litter the shore of Brooklyn's Bottle Beach, the ludicrous pinball prohibition, Staten Island's secret abandoned boatyard, and the hair-raising legend of the infamous abortionist of Fifth Avenue, Madame Restell. From bars, bakeries, and bookstores to food carts, street cleaners, and apartments both cramped and grand, Tenements, Towers & Trash is a wild ride in a time machine taxi from the present day city to bygone days of yore.

Book Description
I trace my ancestry back to the Mayflower, writes Andrew S. Dolkart. Not to the legendary ship that brought the Pilgrims to Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620, but to the more prosaic tenement on the southeast corner of East Broadway and Clinton Street named the Mayflower, where my father was born in 1914 to Russian-Jewish immigrants. For Dolkart, the experience of being raised in a tenement became a metaphor for the life that was afforded countless thousands of other immigrant children growing up in Lower Manhattan during the past century and more. Dolkart presents for us a precise and informative biography of a typical tenement house in New York City that became, in 1988, the site for the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Dolkart documents, analyzes, and interprets the architectural and social history of this building at 97 Orchard Street, starting in the 1860s when it was erected, moving on to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when the neighborhood started to change, and concluding in the present day as the building is reincarnated as the museum. children, who were part of the transformation of New York City and the fabric of everyday American urban life.

Book Description
Excerpt from A Daughter of the Soil He paused and looked round. Yonder, through its leafy framework, he caught a glimpse of the house, a large, rambling, red-brick mansion with nothing particularly romantic about it. There awaited him his aunt, a dear, erratic, comfortable old body whom he had bullied and teased to his heart's content in his childhood, and of whom he had always been fond after a fashion. There, too, was his cousin Henry, the best fellow in the world, for whom, as long as he could remember, he had entertained a brotherly affection of the calmest and least exacting order, and who had borne his prolonged absence from England with the utmost equanimity. It was certainly not the prospect of meeting his relatives again which thus agitated Anthony. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Out of Mulberry Street: Stories of Tenement Life in New York City Since I wrote How the Other Half Lives I have been asked many times upon what basis of experience, of fact, I built that ac count of life in New York tenements. These stories contain the answer. They are from the daily grist of the police hopper in Mul berry street, at which I have been grinding for twenty years. They are reprinted from the columns of my newspaper, and from the magazines as a contribution to the discussion of the lives and homes of the poor, which in recent years has done much to better their lot, and is yet to do much more when we have all come to understand each (fiher. In this discussion only facts are of value, and these stories are true. In the few instances in which I have taken the ordering of events into my own hands, it is chiefly their se quence with which I have interfered. The facts themselves remain as I found them. J. A. R.
