Book Description
Excerpt from A Course of English LiteratureThe present book is based upon a series of papers contributed some years ago to a popular periodical. It is intended for the use, not of schools only, but of that large and increasing class of young men in our great cities, who desire to be guided to the acquirement of a respectable knowledge of our national literature. I believe that there is sufficient novelty in its plan and execution to entitle it to a fair trial; and I am not without hopes that it may help to keep alive that interest in the great masters of the past, which cannot perish without injury.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from English Literature and the Classics This book is a collection of nine lectures delivered in Oxford at the invitation of the Board of English Studies in the winter of 1911 - 12. They were addressed primarily to members of the English School, but in effect to all students of modern literature in the University who cared to hear, from students of ancient literature, something of what the Classics mean in the history of letters. The story of the Ancients and Modems is a story, happily, without conclusion, which has its sequel and its public in every generation. These lectures, here and there expanded, but printed, for the most part, as they were given, are now offered as an instal. Book Description
Excerpt from The Foundations of English Literature The object of this book is to present a careful study of the origins of English literature, and to trace its development up to the time when it assumed its permanent form. The author has attempted to show that the literature of England has been a gradual growth; that it has flowed out of the national life and is inseparably intertwined with the national history; that its development has been constant and consecutive from the very first, and that it commences not with Chaucer but with the primal poetry. The accumulation of a mass of names and dates, of biographical matter and encyclopaedic information, has not been attempted. All writers who were not materially concerned in the evolution of the literature have been omitted. The book is not "a storehouse of facts"; its aim is rather to clear away the confusing mass of details which has grown up about the subject and to expose the main outlines, to trace causes and effects, and to show that no author and no period exist as isolated phenomena, but that they are merely natural results of previous conditions. An attempt has been made to study the growth of the English spirit and to weigh all influences that have prominently affected it in any way. The civil and religious history of England has been kept constantly in view. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Israel Bond may seem like a simple-if-sexy salesman for Mother Margolies' Old World Chicken Soup, but when the Holy Land needs his skills - his quickness with a pun, his second-to-none semitic seduction techniques, and (if absolutely necessary) his abilities at actual espionage - then the man known by the code name Oy-Oy-7 (licensed not only to kill, but to say prayers over the corpse) is there to do what needs be done. In a land surrounded by its enemies, Oy-Oy-7 is called on to guard the nation's great benefactor, the generous but odd Lazarus Loxfinger. Is there more to Loxfinger than meets the eye? Bond aims to find out, even if doing so requires sleeping with dozens of exotic beauties! In the mid-1960s, when Playboy was serializing the adventures of the world's most famous superspy, they interspersed them with the rollicking adventures of Israel's most hilarious weapon, Israel Bond. After the book editions of what the Chicago Tribune called "probably the funniest secret agent parodies ever written" had sold over a million copies, they were allowed to fall out of print. Decades later, all four books in the Israel Bond series are now back in new editions!

Book Description
Excerpt from A Progressive Course in English Literature Composition IN this volume an attempt has been made to bring into close natural relations elementary work in litera ture and composition. The primary principles of rhetoric have been developed inductively, and applied immediately to the work in literature and composi tion. As in the other books of this series, as much opportunity as possible has been given to the pupil for the cultivation of his powers of self-discovery and self-expression. It has also been the aim of the writer to make this, in reality, a progressive course in English. Not only does the subject-matter proceed from the simple to the complex in the order of the subjects treated; but in the treatment of the various subjects, the advance ment goes forward a single step at a time. Funda mental elements are treated first in every case, suggestive helps being given until such time as the pupil should be able to do without them. This makes it possible for the teacher to omit any chapter or to take any chapter in an order different from that of the book, if he so desires. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of English Literature This book aims to provide a general manual of English Literature for students in colleges and universities and others beyond the high-school age. The first purposes of every such book must be to outline the development of the literature with due regard to national life, and to give appreciative interpretation of the work of the most im portant authors. I have written the present volume be cause I have found no other that, to my mind, combines satisfactory accomplishment of these ends with a selec tion of authors sufficiently limited for clearness and with adequate accuracy and fulness of details, biographical and other. A manual, it seems to me, should supply a sys tematic statement of the important facts, so that the greater part of the student's time, in class and without, may be left free for the study of the literature itself. I hope that the book may prove adaptable to various methods and conditions of work. Experience has suggested the brief introductory statement of main literary prin ciples, too often taken for granted by teachers, with much resulting haziness in the student's mind. The list of as signments and questions at the end is intended, of course, to be freely treated. I hope that the list of available inexpensive editions of the chief authors may suggest a practical method of providing the material, especially for colleges which can provide enough copies for class use. Poets, of course, may be satisfactorily read in volumes of selections; but to me, at least, a book of brief extracts from twenty or a hundred prose authors is an absurdity. Perhaps I may venture to add that personally I find it ad visable to pass hastily over the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and so gain as much time as possible for the nineteenth.
