Book Description
This is the story of how a great European crime, the murderous ethnic program of the German Reich, cancelled out the sweet Polish childhood and adolescence of the child Halina Trachtenberg. Above all, the book fills out our knowledge of the huge injustice done to families like hers. It is wonderful she was able to put it down in a satisfying record.

Book Description
Understanding Physics – Second edition is a comprehensive, yet compact, introductory physics textbook aimed at physics undergraduates and also at engineers and other scientists taking a general physics course. Written with today's students in mind, this text covers the core material required by an introductory course in a clear and refreshing way. A second colour is used throughout to enhance learning and understanding. Each topic is introduced from first principles so that the text is suitable for students without a prior background in physics. At the same time the book is designed to enable students to proceed easily to subsequent courses in physics and may be used to support such courses. Mathematical methods (in particular, calculus and vector analysis) are introduced within the text as the need arises and are presented in the context of the physical problems which they are used to analyse. Particular aims of the book are to demonstrate to students that the easiest, most concise and least ambiguous way to express and describe phenomena in physics is by using the language of mathematics and that, at this level, the total amount of mathematics required is neither large nor particularly demanding. 'Modern physics' topics (relativity and quantum mechanics) are introduced at an earlier stage than is usually found in introductory textbooks and are integrated with the more 'classical' material from which they have evolved. This book encourages students to develop an intuition for relativistic and quantum concepts at as early a stage as is practicable. The text takes a reflective approach towards the scientific method at all stages and, in keeping with the title of the text, emphasis is placed on understanding of, and insight into, the material presented.

Book Description
165,321 corks 1 boat Most people have childhood dreams; few ever pursue them. At the age of 34, John Pollack quit a prestigious speechwriting job on Capitol Hill to pursue an idea he had harbored since the age of six: to build a boat out of wine corks and take it on an epic journey. In Cork Boat, Pollack tells the charming and uplifting story of this unlikely adventure. Overcoming one obstacle after another, he convinces skeptical bartenders to save corks, corrals a brilliant but disorganized partner, and cajoles more than a hundred volunteers to help build the boat, many until their fingers bleed. Hired as a speechwriter for President Clinton midway through construction, Pollack soon has the White House saving corks, too. Ultimately, he and his crew set sail down the Douro River in Portugal, where the boat becomes a national sensation. Written with unusual grace and disarming humor, Cork Boat is a buoyant tale of camaraderie, determination, and the power of imagination.

Book Description
In the present book those results of physical research which are of importance for an understanding of nature have been compiled in a short and, in so far as the author was capable, popular presentation. The whole can be arranged in four sections. The first section concerns bodies as they appear to us and as we perceive them directly by means of our eyes. By further research we have learnt that these bodies are built out of very small particles which we call atoms. Even though these atoms cannot be seen directly with the eye, yet we still have quite certain proofs of their existence and of many of their properties. The whole of our knowledge concerning the atomic structure of matter has been discussed in the second section. The work of the last few decades has allowed us to penetrate still further into the inner structure of matter. The structure of the atom itself is examined in the third section. Finally, there exists a whole series of phenomena, which have been explained on the assumption that, in addition to ponderable matters, there is something still else which fills all interstellar space, a medium which is called the aether. The phenomena which take place in this medium are discussed in the last section of the book.

Book Description
Assuming no prior knowledge, this established textbook provides a complete course in physics for beginners and includes coverage on seven core areas of physics, including mechanics, materials, waves and electricity. Readers will develop a solid understanding of topics such as fields, electromagnetism, electronics, atomic and nuclear physics and thermodynamics, and are encouraged to engage with the text through exercises and revision questions. Illustrations are used extensively to complement theoretical explanations and help readers understand the fundamentals of physics. This book is aimed at students on access or foundation programmes in physics, but is also ideal for non-specialist students on degree courses such as biological sciences, chemical sciences, engineering, mathematics and geology, for whom physics is a subsidiary subject. It is also suitable for trainee science teachers and medical students who need to develop a solid background in physics. New to this Edition: - Brand-new unit on Rotational Dynamics - Attractive new layout and design, with more illustrations and use of colour - Expanded companion website with case studies on applications of physics, resources to develop essential mathematical skills, practical experiments and much more
