Book Description
This is the most up-to-date and comprehensive study of French history available ranging from the early middle ages to the present. Amongst its central themes are the relationships between state and society, the impact of war, competition for power, and the ways in which power has been used. Whilst taking full account of major figures such as Philip Augustus, Henri IV, Louis XIV, Napoleon and de Gaulle, it sets their activities within the broader context of changing economic and social structures and beliefs, and offers rich insights into the lives of ordinary men and women. This third edition has been substantially revised and includes a new chapter on contemporary France - a society and political system in crisis as a result of globalisation, rising unemployment, a failing educational system, growing social and racial tensions, corruption, the rise of the extreme right, and a widespread loss of confidence in political leaders.

Book Description
This new concise history of modern painting offers an indispensable reference to the complexities and characteristics of this medium, which now exists alongside many other contemporary practices that embrace radically expanded ideas about art. While acknowledging the legacy of Herbert Read’s classic 1959 study A Concise History of Modern Painting in the World of Art series, academic and artist Simon Morley places the foundation of modern art much earlier than Read, at the emergence of Romanticism and the dawn of the industrial age. Structured loosely chronologically by period, the focus is as much on individual artists as movements, with works discussed within a broader context—stylistic, historical, geographic, and gender and ethnic frames—themes which recur throughout the chapters. Generously illustrated, the global and diverse range of artists featured include William Blake, Édouard Manet, Hilma af Klint, Kazimir Malevich, Willem de Kooning, Amrita Sher-Gil, Faith Ringgold, and Kehinde Wiley. This guide also includes an appendix in the form of questions the reader might like to ask about the artists and ideas discussed—in order to reconsider the works from a contemporary perspective.

Book Description
Excerpt from A Concise History of Painting In the fifteen years which have elapsed since the late Mrs. Charles Heaton's "Concise History of Painting" was published, the labours of art-scholars have been very extensive and searching, and the mode and temper of art criticism have greatly changed. Nevertheless, this book, as it left the hand of its authoress, remains still the most readable and comprehensive of all short histories of Painting. It has been my aim in the present edition not to impair its precious quality of readableness, and to increase its comprehensiveness by adding notices of many artists whose exclusion would, at the present date, mar its value as a text -book. To effect the latter object without forfeiting the title of "concise," it has been necessary to reduce the original text by the excision of such passages as appeared redundant or least valuable. Otherwise the present edition differs from the first mainly in the following respects. Dates and other matters of fact have been revised throughout. The notices of Claude and the Poussins have been transferred from the Italian to the French School. These and the notices of several other painters have been re-written, and notes throughout the book have been added. The chapter on "The Last Efforts and Extinction of Painting in Italy" (Book iv., chap. 5) has been re-written, and a concluding note on the English School, and Chronological lists of the painters of each country have been added. With the exceptions of the chapter, note, and lists mentioned in the preceding sentence, and of alterations of date and other slight changes, all new or re-written matter will be found included within square brackets [ ].
