One of the earlier studies in community ecology, from a modern aspect, was that Of Davenport who studied the animal communities of a salt beach. The animal communities Of deciduous forest, throughout developmental stages to the climax, have been described by Shelford (1912, with particular emphasis on succession, and its climax animal community by Adams Adams (1906, 1909) has given accounts of the animal ecology Of northern coniferous forest, and he and his associates (1920) have published the results of an ecological reconnaissance into coniferous forest Of the alpine type.
