The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI, MMPI-2, and MMPI-A) and the Rorschach are the two tests used most widely in clinical personality assessment to evaluate personality functioning, current emotional state, and the presence, nature, and severity of psychopathology, as well as to formulate treatment interventions. Psychologists' vigorous interest in and intense loyalty to the Rorschach and MMPI are reflected in the large and still growing theoretical and empirical literature concerning these tests. Given the enduring popularity of these two tests, it is surprising to find that only a small percentage of these numerous studies have examined the relationships between the two. Both tests provide valuable information about an individual's symptoms, behavior, emotions, interpersonal functioning, self-concept, defenses, and the dynamics underlying their behavior. Although much has been written about each test individually, little has been written about how to use the two tests together even though many psychologists use a battery of tests when conducting personality assessments in clinical practice. The basic premise of this book is that psychologists' armamentarium of assessment techniques can be strengthened by using the MMPI-2 and Rorschach together in a complementary fashion, and that essential information may be lost if one test is used to the exclusion of the other. The book examines interrelationships between the MMPI-2 and Rorschach on several different levels including empirical and research findings, conceptual relationships, and integrated interpretations using a series of in-depth case presentations. A balance is maintained between the foundation provided by research and by clinical theory for conceptualizing, understanding, and treating patients with a variety of psychological disorders. This volume illustrates the contribution psychological test findings make to clinical decision making and differential diagnosis, and discusses the links between test data, clinical judgment, and DSM-IV.

This study was planned to investigate the value of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory as a diagnostic instrument in differentiating between patients with illness of known organic origin and those for whoseillness no organic etiology could be demonstrated. Hospitalized veterans of World War II and the Korean War in five selected disability groups were compared with each other and with a control group for difference in MMPI results as well as in age, education, and intelligence. An attempt was made to demonstrate the specificity of a response pattern for the clinical entity, psychogenic headache, by camparing this pattern with those for the other nosological categories: chronic neurological disease, pulmonary tuberculosis, orthopedic surgery, and paranoid schizophrenia. The method chosen for the comparative analysis of the MMPI profiles of these several groups was that in which their mean scores on the various scales of the test were compared. The sequence of operations in analyzing the test results was as follows: 1. Computation of the mean T-score for each of the validating and clinical scales for each diagnostic group. 2. Derivation of the standard deviation for each mean T-score. 3. Deviation of the standard error for each mean T-score. 4. Determination of the significance of the difference between each mean T-score and every other, using Fisher's method for small uncorrelated samples. The MMPI was found to distinguish very clearly between the clinical groups, all the non-psychotic groups having similar profiles. These were characterized by dominance of the neurotic triad. The paranoid schoizophrenia group was very clearly distinguished from all the others by means of its profile whose curve was skewed in the opposite direction, with its peak on the schizophrenia scale. There were significant differences between the patient groups on the lie, K, hypochondriesis, depression, masculinity-femininity, paranoia, psychasthenia, and schizophrenia scales. Only the F, hysteria, psychopathic deviate, and hypomania scales failed to distinguish significantly. The evidence is strong enough to infer that, with larger samples, statistically significant differences would be obtained on every scale between one or more pairs of nosological groups. In terms of the stated purpose of the study, only equivocally positive results can be reported. No forthright difference, no unique configuration, was found to set apart the functional disorders from the physiogenic. The differences which were found were more subtle in character. Within the framework of the bimodal curve the profile of each group presented its individual variation on the common theme. The clinical impression of the neurological, tubercular, and orthopedic groups in the present experiment includes an emotional overlay to the basic organic pathology. Here then is a suggestion that the lack of differentiation between these and the psychogenic headache group is not a failure of the test as a diagnostic tool. Instead it is evidence of emotional maladjuustment in patients with illnesses of organic etiology equally as serious as among the headache patients.
