Abstract: The purpose of this project was to locate a potential funding source and write a grant that will provide peer led education to immigrant Latino families regarding mental health services. This project goal is to increase the utilization of services within their community. A search was conducted to locate an appropriate funder for the proposed program. Various areas needed to be addressed to identify an appropriate funder which included correlation of goals and visions between the purposed program and the funding source. In funding this program, The California Endowment was chosen as the outcomes align with the goals of the program which include but are not limited to "health-home," decreasing youth violence and improving youth development. The goals for this program are to provide education to immigrant Latino families about mental health in an environment that is comfortable and non-threatening. This program will also provide various resources that will facilitate the services that are needed within this population.

Fifteen years ago, Concha Delgado-Gaitan began literacy research in Carpinteria, California. At that time, Mexican immigrants who labored in nurseries, factories, and housekeeping, had almost no voice in how their children were educated. Complicating the common view that immigrant incorporation is a top-down process, determined largely by parents, Vikki Katz explores how children actively broker connections that enable their families to become woven into the fabric of American life. Children’s immersion in the U.S. school system and contact with mainstream popular culture enables them more quickly to become fluent in English and familiar with the conventions of everyday life in the United States. These skills become an important factor in how families interact with their local environments. Kids in the Middle explores children’s contributions to the family strategies that improve communication between their parents and U.S. schools, healthcare facilities, and social services, from the perspectives of children, parents, and the English-speaking service providers that interact with these families via children’s assistance. Katz also considers how children’s brokering affects their developmental trajectories. While their help is critical to addressing short-term family needs, children’s responsibilities can constrain their access to educational resources and have consequences for their long-term goals. Kids in the Middle explores the complicated interweaving of family responsibility and individual attainment in these immigrant families. Through a unique interdisciplinary approach that combines elements of sociology and communication approaches, Katz investigates not only how immigrant children connect their families with local institutional networks, but also how they engage different media forms to bridge gaps between their homes and mainstream American culture. Community-based educational programs play a significant role in the education and positive development of youth. Over the last decade, the Oregon 4-H Youth Development program has made special efforts to reach and engage Latino youth and families in non-formal educational programs. Latino families most often do not access community-based educational programs because they don't know about them and/or they do not feel welcomed. This report was prepared to help educators better understand the nuances of Latino culture that impact the participation of youth and to learn how to design and implement culturally responsive programming that will attract Latino youth. The report provides a synthesis of the knowledge gained over ten years of experience through the Oregon 4-H Latino Outreach Project. Topics addressed include ways to build relationships and establish trust with Latino communities, issues involved in the selection of outreach staff, critical elements of culturally responsive programming, evaluating outreach programs, and recruiting and supporting Latino adult volunteers. While the information reported here was gained in non-formal educational setting, much of what was learned is applicable to formal educational settings as well. This book is a product of research stemming from a multiyear project conducted by Elzbieta M. Gozdziak and Micah N. Bump for the Institute for the Study of International Migration at Georgetown University. The project studied immigration integration in areas that had no recent experience with foreign-born newcomers and the information presented within this book builds upon this by identifying and reviewing promising practices and strategies that facilitated immigrant integration. Gozdziak and Bump include descriptions of the most effective approaches as well as an analysis of challenges within resettlement programs. By highlighting successful initiatives in newcomer communities it seeks to assist stakeholders in their decision-making processes. As newcomer-related issues are complex and solutions are rarely "one-size fits all," the programs described here are unique responses to particular issues in individual communities, and they may not be an exact fit for other communities with similar problems. The book is not a cookbook or a blueprint that can be applied anywhere and everywhere. Rather, it is meant as inspiration and motivation for trying out new strategies. Successful practices discussed in this book include: programs facilitating English language acquisition, access to culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate health care services, access to vocational training and higher education opportunities, community development, microenterprise, creation of homeownership opportunities for immigrants, and efforts to ensure safety of newcomers.
