Book Description
Excerpt from Hymns for the Christian Church and Home Worship is an attitude which our nature assumes, not for a purpose, but from an emotion. Whenever it is genuine, it is the natural and spontaneous utterance of a mind possessed by the conception of the infinite relations in which we stand, and aspiring towards a point of new worthy of their solemnity. And though it breathes forth the deepest and greatest of desires, it is essentially an end, and not a means and, like the embrace of friendship, or the kiss of domestic affection, loses all its meaning, when adopted from conviction of its reasonableness, or 'with a view to personal advantage. Those who ask, or who would ex plain, what it is for, - whether disposed to regard it as. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Hymns for the Christian Church and Home In preparing the present Edition, the Editor has spared no pains to render his volume worthy of the favour and acceptance which have been accorded to it. The Metre-marks have been simplified, in conformity with the method adopted in the small-sized Edition, and explained on a succeeding page. The Music-references at the foot of each hymn have been thoroughly revised. They are adapted to the complete Edition of Webbe's Psalmody, which is simultaneously published: the richness and extensive use of which render it unnecessary, for the most part, to refer to any other work, except Mr. Ogden's Holy Songs. Furnished with these two works, any Choir of ordinary skill and diligence can do justice to every hymn in this volume. The occasional references to Jowett's Musse Solitaræ are intended only for the private convenience of those who happen to possess and use that work. It has been thought advisable greatly to reduce the number of tunes referred to for each Hymn; and in general to name only one; the definite association of particular words with a single melody contributing to them a fresh element of interest. These simplifications have superseded the Index of Tunes contained in former Editions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Hymns for Church and Home: With Tunes The large number of hymns in unusual metres is owing to the fact that many beautiful tunes have been composed in these metres, enabling hymns before unprovided with music to be used in public worship. As a general rule, these metres are placed first in each section, followed by long, common, and short metres.
