Book Description
This report is an introduction to the results of a five-year co-operative study into the feasibility of using moths as biological indicators of ecosystem health in Fundy National Park, New Brunswick. The report describes the moth sampling methodology used, describes and maps the sampling site locations, and provides details of the floristic composition of the sites. Study results presented demonstrate the patterns of seasonal distributions of both individuals and species, and the pattern of species emergence throughout the year for each of four years at two of the sites. Based on the similarities in the patterns between and within sites and years, a protocol for conducting further moth surveys is also proposed. Appendices include tables showing vegetation species composition at the study sites and graphs showing numbers of individual moths and species observed in research traps.

Book Description
This volume contains the lectures and seminars given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on “Sensor Systems for Biological Threads: The Algal Toxins Case”, held in Pisa, Italy in October, 2007. The Institute was sponsored and funded by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. It is my pleasant duty to thank this institution. This ASI offered updated information on how far the research on algal toxins has gone in the exploration of structures, biosynthesis and regulation of toxins, and the development of technology for bio-monitoring these c- pounds. Algae can form heavy growths in ponds, lakes, reservoirs and sl- moving rivers throughout the world; algae can house toxins which are - ually released into water when the cells rupture or die. Hundreds of toxins have been identified so far. Detection methods, including rapid screening, have been developed to help us learning more about them, especially to find out which toxins are a real threat for people and what conditions encourage their production and accumulation. Early detection of algal toxins is an - portant aspect for public safety and natural environment, and significant efforts are underway to develop effective and reliable tools that can be used for this purpose.

Book Description
Drawing from a decade-long collaboration between Japan and Russia, this important volume presents the first major synthesis of current knowledge on the ecophysiology of the coniferous forests growing on permafrost at high latitudes. It presents ecological data for a region long inaccessible to most scientists, and raises important questions about the global carbon balance as these systems are affected by the changing climate. Making up around 20% of the entire boreal forests of the northern hemisphere, these ‘permafrost forest ecosystems’ are subject to particular constraints in terms of temperature, nutrient availability, and root space, creating exceptional ecosystem characteristics not known elsewhere. This authoritative text explores their diversity, structure, dynamics and physiology. It provides a comparison of these forests in relation to boreal forests elsewhere, and concludes with an assessment of the potential responses of this unique biome to climate change. The book will be invaluable to advanced students and researchers interested in boreal vegetation, forest ecology, silviculture and forest soils, as well as to researchers into climate change and the global carbon balance.

Book Description
This volume is concerned with liverworts and hornworts of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Biogeographically it covers the Mediterranean and Eurosiberian regions. This handbook comprises identification keys to generic and specific level with corresponding illustrations. Each genus includes a short morphological description referring only to the species that appear in the present work. In monospecific genera the species name follows the description; if plurispecific a key to species is given. We recognised 286 species, which represent 68% of the European hepatic flora.
