COVID-19 uprooted millions of employees into the “new normal” of working from home. With the rapid growth of home offices, this research further investigates the ergonomic conditions that work from home employees experienced during the COVID- 19 pandemic. An anonymous survey about home offices ergonomics was distributed to friends, family, and colleagues by email and was completed by 85 individuals. 60% of the participants reported discomfort somewhere in their bodies while working from home. 25.49% of the participants who reported pain said that the pain continued when they returned to their office setting. In addition, only 7 out of 85 or 8.24% received any type of ergonomics training. Results indicated that participants with a higher income were more likely to have a designated office in their homes. Participants who received training to work from home were less likely to experience pain. Responses from the survey indicate that overall, participants would prefer a hybrid style of working in the office and remotely. The study concluded that employers should provide their employees with all the necessary tools to creating a safe work from home space by providing training that includes ergonomic techniques, equipment, and resources.

Since the official declaration of the coronavirus/COVID-19 spread an international pandemic by the World Health Organization-WHO on the 11th of March 2020 (WHO,2020), the government of the Kingdom of Bahrain adopted the work-from-home option for numerous jobs and organizations in order to activate social distancing and race with time in combating the local spread of the virus. This situation presents a large-scale experiment, and a field of research opportunity to understand work-from-home from diverse perspectives. Objective: The objective of this study is to survey worker perceptions on the work-from-home experience during the pandemic and explore its future as a permanent option for some jobs and special circumstances. 3 hypotheses are used; H1: Workers are highly satisfied with their experience in working from home, H2: Respondents find working from home an advantageous option, H3: Views on working from home will differ significantly by gender.Methodology: Quantitative approach was used, devising a self-administered questionnaire including 24 multiple choice questions. Cronbach Alpha was calculated at 0.737 to test for internal consistency. 2 expert views on the questionnaire were sought for content validity. Google Forms Application was utilized to automate the questionnaire and distribute it through social media channels. A total of 219 responses were gathered and analyzed. Results: H1 was accepted as 95% of the respondents who worked from home were satisfied, of which 71% being strongly satisfied. Interestingly, 86% of the respondents that are working from home noticed an improvement in their productivity. H2: was accepted using one-tail t-test at 0.05 error level. H3 was rejected using 2 tail t-test at 0.05 error level. Originality and Limitation: This study provides historical empirical evidence gathered on a worldwide experiment of working from home during an international pandemic of a scale that appears every 100 years. It is the first study to provide empirical evidence of worker perceptions on the experience, given that the majority of concurrent research used pre-gathered labour data to estimate the number of jobs that can survive the pandemic using work-from-home option.In contrast to past research findings raising concern with work-life balance, results show that 94% of the respondents agreed that work-from-home aids in balancing work and life responsibilities, suggesting that a status of work-life integration was experienced during the pandemic. Considering the size of the phenomenon, the researchers suggest considering this study exploratory in nature. Future studies in Bahrain can survey the perceptions of policy makers, HR professionals, and line managers, and employing differing data collection tools such as in-depth-interviews and focus groups to create a multidimensional holistic view of the experience.

In this review a total of 365 papers were identified and 18 quantitative, seven qualitative and one mixed method studies were included. Workplaces have a major influence on employees’ quality of life and the ability to impact their well-being. The altered working conditions resulted from the digitalization are affecting employees’ well-being. Additionally, COVID-19 has transformed the approach to the concept of work, and an important aspect that disruptively emerged during the pandemic is remote working. Decisions on how to promote employees’ well-being whilst the new work arrangements need to be based on available evidence to optimise employees’ outcomes.

This report presents Eurofound's research on telework during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. It explores changes in the incidence of telework, working conditions experienced by employees working from home and changes to regulations addressing issues related to this working arrangement. The findings reveal a rapid escalation of telework triggered by the pandemic: in 2021, 2 out of 10 European employees were teleworking - a figure that most likely would not have been reached before 2027 had the pandemic not occurred. The health crisis unleashed the social and technological potential for flexibility in terms of working time and place. The impacts of telework on working conditions were initially difficult to determine because it was difficult to disentangle them from pandemic-induced factors, such as lockdowns and school closures. However, both the positive impacts, such as the contribution of telework to improving work-life balance, and the negative impacts, such as reduced social interaction and an increase in overtime worked, have become more evident. The rise in telework and an awareness of its implications for working conditions have prompted a renewed focus on regulatory frameworks, with new telework regulations passed in several EU Member States.
