The word political is of course used in its governmental and not its partisan sense, though every phase of the state's history is treated according to its relative impor tance, the activities of the leading political parties not excepted. We hope that you may sometime, if not now, realize that noble courage and devotion to duty may be shown in other ways besides in deeds of war and adventure, and that you may come to appreciate the high purpose of the brave men and women who have made of the wilderness the sunlit garden of opportunity and happiness which we enjoy. Book Description
Excerpt from Stories of Indiana Each story stands by itself, and may be read without refer ence to any of the others. In choosing them, one by one, consideration was given to their availability as presenting the characteristics of the people, the time, and the locality, so as to make the book unfold scene after scene running apace with the progress of our State's civilization. Of course the student learned in history will not find much that is new to him as he reads; yet some of the chapters are made wholly out of matter never before in print, while others contain incidents drawn from the author's private stores of research. Book Description
Excerpt from History of Indiana We are to follow the story of Indiana's making through two centuries of progress. But first let us consider the factors which helped in the making of a great State. One of the most important of these is its position with regard to the country as a whole. Indiana on the Nation's Highway. - Indiana lies at the crossroads of the nation. The summit plain which lies across the mississippi-st. Lawrence watershed covers the northern portion of the State. This furnished an easy grade for the lines of traffic from east to west. The Lincoln Highway is a new and recent use of this great natural thoroughfare. In like manner the gentle southerly slope of the Wabash basin makes north and south communication easy and direct. The Dixie Highway is the latest witness of this line of transit. T o - day, no less than nineteen east and west trunk lines and seven north and south systems of railway traverse the State. Thus Indiana lies on the main highway of commerce and travel between the East and the West, as well as the North and the South. Moreover, two great inland waterways lie along the two ends of the State and supplement the overland lines of traffic. This fact of strategic location, as we shall see, has had an important bearing upon the history of the State. Book Description
Excerpt from Centennial History of Indiana A half century ago, there was a crying need for Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup among the children of Indiana. To day, those of the children of '66, who have survived the taking ways of malaria, the White Caps and the automobile, are engaged in the mad rush for wealth and too busy to spend weeks and months poring over, and wading through, the long drawn-out detailed, dry facts of history as heretofore doled out to Indiana readers; hence this little volume. It is designed to take the place of Mother Winslow's concoction as the crying need of a busy public. This work is not intended to belittle the efforts of such historians as have gone before. They did the best they could. Many of them did not have the advantage of an acquaintance with the author of this work. The Centennial History is designed to be a plain, truthful, delineation of important events in Indiana. It is arranged so that the shop-keeper, in his leisure moments between sales of shirtwaists and prunes, and the farmer, during the noon hours and on rainy afternoons, may glean the history of their native state, free from the frills, embellishments and biased opinions of the larger chronicles. All such superfluous matters as Indian massacres, detailed political battles and biographies of big guns have been eliminated. Nobody's picture, or his own recollection of the great things he has accomplished, is published herein at so much per. Book Description
Excerpt from The Libraries of Indiana This was carried into effect by a general law for the establish ment of county libraries in 1818, and there had been adopted, in 1816, a very good law for the incorporation of public libra ries in general. The two, with various amendments added in later years, covered the public library system of the State until' after the adoption of the Constitution of 1851. The county libraries thus established furnished the chief part of the books to which the Indiana public had access during the remainder of the first half of the present century. Book Description
Excerpt from Biographical and Historical Sketches of Early Indiana Many of the sketches contained in this book were originally published in the Indianapolis Journal. These, and such as have been given the public in other papers, have been carefully revised and rewritten. Some of the sketches, how ever, were prepared expressly for this work. I have not written of living men, but only of those who have passed away. The dead Governors of Indiana - both Territorial and State - are sketched, and monographs of other distinguished men are given. The book contains other papers, of a historical character, the whole making a work which, I hope, will prove of permanent value. The information contained in this book, which necessarily develops much of the early political history of the State, was obtained from various sources, and can not elsewhere be found without great research and labor. N o inconsiderable part of it is derived from the author's own observation and recollection, and would pass away with him were it not committed to writing. Should this book be favorably received' by the public, it will, most probably, be followed by another of similar character, for the author is in possession of abundant material for such a work.
