New insights into the history of Islamic glassmaking The ancient glass industry changed dramatically towards the end of the first millennium. The Roman glassmaking tradition of mineral soda glass was increasingly supplanted by the use of plant ash as the main fluxing agent at the turn of the ninth century CE. Defining primary production groups of plant ash glass has been a challenge due to the high variability of raw materials and the smaller scale of production. Islamic Glass in the Making advocates a large-scale archaeometric approach to the history of Islamic glassmaking to trace the developments in the production, trade and consumption of vitreous materials between the eighth and twelfth centuries and to separate the norm from the exception. It proposes compositional discriminants to distinguish regional production groups, and provides insights into the organisation of the glass industry and commerce during the early Islamic period. The interdisciplinary approach leads to a holistic understanding of the development of Islamic glass; assemblages from the early Islamic period in Mesopotamia, Central Asia, Egypt, Greater Syria and Iberia are evaluated, and placed in the larger geopolitical context. In doing so, this book fills a gap in the present literature and advances a large-scale approach to the history of Islamic glass.

In the eighth century CE, the Christian theologian John Damascene referred to a Book of the Cow among the sacred texts of the Muslims. P. Hamb. Arab. 68 not only represents so far the earliest known Qurʾānic manuscript preserved on papyrus, but also bears witness to an independent circulation of the Sūra of The Cow in late seventh- or early eighth-century Egypt. Significant deviations from the commonly accepted text of the Qurʾān suggest that this copy was rapidly discarded. The present volume offers a complete edition as well as a thorough philological and historical study of the manuscript.

The glass finds are from the nine seasons of archaeological excavations carried out under the direction of Professor GT Scanlon at Fustat in south Cairo between 1964 and 1980. These were recovered under stratified conditions thus supplying dating sequences for glass from about 700 AD to the end of the twelfth century when Fustat ceased to be occupied. Glass of the later period-the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries- is represented by surface finds. These finds from Fustat are a principal source for the history fo the glass industry in Egypt from the Umayyad period down to the Fatmid caliphate. All the glass techniques known to the Islamic world are represented and show the manifold uses of glass ranging from objects of everyday use to high quality products for the luxury market. Although the Fustat glass comes mainly from local glass houses, the collection includes pieces imported from other centres in the Islamic world.
