Book Description
The title describes the authors' understanding of current descriptive, subject cataloging and classification practices for legal materials, offering illustrations of descriptive or subject cataloging and MARC records. The authors' hope is to make the new edition as authoritative as possible by including hypertext links to all of the major resources that make up a law catalogers' desktop today. In this edition, Part 1 covers the most common and troublesome legal publication questions with a much greater emphasis on electronic resources. The subject chapter includes many of those same cataloging recommendations, but now includes some examples of genre/form terms. Part 2 is a greatly expanded combination of the A-Z sections that covered subject headings and the illustrated glossary. This A-Z section also now includes genre/form term examples. A chapter on LC Classification as well as classification tips included in the A-Z section is completely new to this 5th edition, classification coverage having been previously excluded. While previous editions placed an emphasis on Library of Congress examples, that is no longer possible in today's "cooperative" environment; plus, examples had to be revised to make them conform to the revised RDA.--Publisher.

Book Description
Here is an essential introductory guide on all aspects of law librarianship written especially for non-law librarians, library school students, and beginning law librarians. Although there are several excellent practical handbooks and numerous articles on specific topics of law librarianship for practicing law librarians, Basics of Law Librarianship is the only resource that addresses the information needs of the student or new law librarian. Author Deborah Panella, managing librarian of a large, prominent New York law firm, explores the major areas of law librarianship. She covers vital topics such as the legal clientele, collection development, research tools, technical services, impact of technology, and management issues, and describes what makes law libraries different from other special libraries. She has written a clear, readable volume without excessive detail or the use of special terminology. The bibliography of law library literature and the index add enormously to the book’s value as a major reference.
