Book Description
Excerpt from A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen, Vol. 2 of 4 Having thus cleared the path to the ancient authorities, we come, for the first time, to consider who and what the Admi rable Crichton really was. The ac count which we have already given of his birth, parentage, and success at the university, we hold to be authentic; and to that part, therefore, of the biography we have no occasion to refer. Of the matters spoken of by Urquhart upon his own authority, we have said enough, and they come not within the sphere of such investigation. Book Description
Excerpt from A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen, Vol. 2: Brown-Dalrymple In London, to which he immediately proceeded, he met with a friendly re. Ception from lord Auckland, to whom he had become known during his lord ship's residence as ambassador at the Hague, and who now exerted himself so warmly in his favour, that he was, in the course of a few months, appointed to succeed Dr Campbell, as professor of divinity in the Marischal college, Aber deen; to which honourable appointment was soon after added, that of principal of the same college. We are informed by the writer of the life of Dr Brown, in the Ency. Clopaedia Britannica, that this new professorship imposed upon him a very serious task, that of composing a course of theological lectures, extend ing over five sessions. After a review of the different systems of religion which lay claim to a divine origin, he discussed most amply the evidence: and doctrines of natural religion. He then proceeded to the evidences of re vealed religion, of which he gave a very full and learned view. The christiar scheme formed the next suiject of an inquiry, in which the peculiar doc trines of Christianity were very extensively unfolded. Christian ethics were also explained; and it formed part of his original plan, to treat of all the great controversies that have agitated the religious world. This portion of the course was not, however, completed. Besides attending to the duties of his chair, and of his principality, Dr Brown ofiiciated as one of the ministers of the West church in Aberdeen. A volume of his sermons appeared in 1803. He also occasionally attended the General Assembly, where his manly eloquence and impressive mode of speaking, caused him to be listened to with great re spect, though he never arrived at the character of a leader. While discharging every public duty with zeal and efficacy, he did not neglect his favourite pur suits of literature. In 1809, he published Philemon, or the Progress of Virtue, a poem, Edinburgh, 2 vols. Octavo; and in 1816, appeared his greatest literary effort, An Essay on the Existence of a Supreme Creator, Aberdeen, 2 vols. Octavo. The latter was the successful competing essay, among fifty, for Burnet's first prize of 1250; the second, of 400, being awarded to Dr Sumner, afterwards bishop of Chester. Dr Brown also wrote a few pamphlets Upon passing occurrences, political and otherwise; and one or two articles in Latin, relating to formalities in the university over which he presided. His last considerable work was A Comparative View of Chris tianity, and of the other Forms of Religion which he. Existed, and still exist in the World, particularly with regard to their Moral Tendency, Edinburgh, 2 vols. Octavo, 1826. Book Description
Excerpt from A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen, Vol. 5 of 4: With a Supplemental Volume, Continuing the Biographies to the Present Time While a national Biography is so fitted to ari est the general attention, and endear itself to the patriotic feelings of those people whose great and good men it commemorates, a national Scottish Biography possesses such advantages of this nature, as must always impart to it an especial interest. For it exhibits a country the least populous in Europe, and originally the most remote and neglected, producing, in spite of these disadvantages, such a multitude of leading minds in every department of thoixght and action, as have advanced it into the very foremost rank of nations, and given it an imperishable name in history. The men by whom such a change has been achieved must have left a memorial of no ordinary importance. Something more, however, than a merely intellectual and historical interest belongs, in a peculiar degree, to Scottish Biography. Those men of whom it is the record, were in most instances of humble origin and scanty resources men who were obliged not only skilfully to use, but in many cases absolutely to create the means by which they were boz ne onward and who yet, by their talents, their energy, and their moral worth, won their way to eminence in every department of human excellence. While patriotism is ennobled and purified by the study of such examples, how persuasive a lesson they contain for the ingenuous youths by whom the manliood of Scotland in a few years will be represented! It is by such reading that they can best be taught by the example of such precursors that they will be best animated and dii ected. In these instances they have full proof, that however adverse their own circumstances are, everything may be compelled to give way to indomitable resolution, unwearing industry, and steady upright integrity. A full national Biography for Scotland, from the earliest period till 1834, was accomplished by the work, the publication of which was completed dui ing that year, under the title of Lives op Illustrious and Distinguished Scotsmen, of which the first four volumes of the present is a re issue. But since the period of its first publication, circumstances have occurred, through which a large addition to the original collection was ui gently demanded. Book Description
Excerpt from A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen, Vol. 1 The first edition of the Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen was edited by Mr. (now Dr.) Robert Chambers. It was issued in 4 vols. demy 8vo, and completed in 1834. In his preface the Editor says: - "A biographical dictionary of eminent natives of Scotland has been regarded as a desideratum in our national literature, for the greater part of a century. Such a work was successively contemplated by Sir David Dalrymple and Mr. William Smellie, each of whom proceeded so far with the design as to write a few of the articles. When the Editor of the present Work began a few years ago to inquire into the literary and historical antiquities of his country, he found the desire of possessing a dictionary of this kind not in the least abated, but very little hope entertained that, under the existing prospects of literature, it would be possible to present such a book to the public. He proceeded, nevertheless, perhaps rather under the influence of a peculiar enthusiasm, than any wiser or more considerate motive, to take upon himself a task which at least two of his predecessors had failed to accomplish, and for which he could not but feel himself to be in many respects imperfectly qualified. Sometime after beginning his labours, a fortunate alliance with his present publishers, who had projected a similar work, removed many of the original difficulties, and he was enabled to commence the publication in 1832. "In now taking a retrospective view of his labours, he sees, with some regret, passages which he could amend, and even one or two articles which, upon a more rigid estimate of merit he would be disposed to omit. He has much satisfaction, however, in reflecting that very few instances of error in point of feet have been indicated to him; so that he is enabled to hope that his Work, upon the whole, makes that near approach to correctness, which is the most valuable feature in a book of reference."
