Book Description
Excerpt from A Bibliography of Physical Training This bibliography is presented to the teachers and students of physical training at the earnest request of the Physical Directors' Society of the Young Men's Christian Associations. A committee was appointed by the society at the World's Fair meeting in St. Louis in the summer of 1904. This committee consisted of J. H. Mccurdy, J. H. Scott, and George T. Hepbron. They were instructed to pub lish a physical training bibliography. J. H. Scott and George T. Hep bron were made responsible for the raising of the funds necessary for publication. The financial committee secured over one hundred ad vance orders for the book, and in addition subscriptions from the fol lowing gentlemen: M. B. Rideout, W. Y. Reithard, George T. Hep bron, W. H. Ball, W. G. Truex, George J. Fisher, M. D., C. R. H. Jackson, J. B. Modesitt, J. W. Waters, C. E. Beckett, Fred West, W. H. Flood, A. B. Wegener, E. A. Sovereign, Frank Killam, G. F. Poole, M. D., George L. Meylan, M. D. The preparation of the bibliography was referred to J. H. Mccurdy. The object of this work has been to present a subject index of the physical training literature which would be helpful to the physical director and other students of physical training. The inspiration for this work came from Mr. J. T. Bowne some sixteen years ago; the preparation of the material began in 1895. The first task was the ar rangement of a method of classification; this was prepared jointly by J. T. Bowne and J. H. Mccurdy. The third edition of the classifica tion appears in this book. Book Description
Excerpt from Bibliography of Physical Training: English Titles, 1905 to May, 1911; A Thesis This book is a supplement to the Physical Training Bibliog raphy prepared by Dr. J. H. Mccurdy, which was published by the Physical Directors' Society in 1905. It includes a selected list of titles in English from 1905 to May, 1911. It is the desire of the Society to continue to add to the original Bibliography so as to keep the titles up-to-date. We appreciate the excellent service which Mr. Dwight T. Bridges has performed in bringing together this material and in permitting the Society to put it in permanent form. Book Description
Excerpt from Physical Training Treated From American and European Points of View The Sun has done me the compliment to ask for some account of my journeying and studies during my stay in Europe, from the middle of May, 1888, until the end of August, 1889. But it seems to me that I can better serve the cause of physical training, in which the public is beginning to take a livelier and more intelligent interest than hitherto, by foregoing any attempt to give an itinerary or description of my travels and observations, however interesting and instructive they were to myself, and by attempting to set forth, in as impersonal a way as possible, some of the conclusions at which I have arrived as the result of my personal study of gymnasia, play-grounds, public and military schools, and orthopaedic institutes in America, as well as in England, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, and Sweden, and to note some of the problems with regard to physical training which are occupying or seem likely soon to occupy the attention of educators in Baltimore, as well as in other parts of the country. As I shall not cumber what I have to say with references to authorities, or with my reasons for what may appear to be unsupported and arbitrary opinions, it seems proper for me to state that, before I was enabled to devote some months to the study of athletics and gymnastics in England d(iermanv. in i8Sr, I had had occasion to visit all the P.E. Book Description
Excerpt from Power and Health Through Progressive Exercise It must not be thought, however, that this book deals wholly with heavy gymnastics, weight-lifting, and feats of strength. Many light exercises are given as being valuable to promote elasticity and suppleness; and, in addi tion to these, - as an apprenticeship of mode rate exercises is absolutely necessary in order that one may become capable of the simplest exhibition of force, - many intermediate exer cises are carefully described, and their effects discussed. The effects of common indoor and outdoor athletic sports and exercises are gone into. All which, it is hoped, will make this volume a complete manual of physical culture, suitable alike for those boys and girls, men and women, who may wish, without the aid of a teacher, to make the best of their bodies. Book Description
Excerpt from The Genevieve Stebbins System of Physical Training The lessons in Part I. Are an epitome of all psychological physical culture, and, thoroughly carried out in daily life, will transform that life into a healthy and happy one. This system will be found to be progressive, going from the simple to the complex. It is a complete gymnastic system along aesthetic lines and has been elaborated by the author after many years' experience as teacher and director of physical training in the best schools of New York, com bined with a critical study of the carved works of ancient art. Bas-relief, alto-relief and the free figure, in vase, frieze, pillar, and temple, have been the models for much of the work. This, blended with a knowledge of medical gymnastics, makes the author bold enough to think that she is offering something of real value to the teacher and the pupil of physical culture. Book Description
Excerpt from Pioneers of Modern Physical Training The first edition of pioneers OF modern physical training was merely a reprint in book form of a series of biographical Sketches which appeared in Phy sical Training from month to month between January of 1909 and June of 1910. They were begun with no thought of completeness, and with the idea of furnishing a full - page portrait faced by a page of text. After two instalments had been prepared it was decided to lengthen the remaining articles in order to allow a more adequate treatment. Certain persons whom I desired very much to include in the list were omitted at the time owing to lack of available portraits or the necessary biographi cal data, or because the historical background involved had not yet been sufficiently studied. None of these reasons exists any longer, and I have therefore added the names of Amoros, H jalinar Ling, Brosius, and Betz. Other Sketches have been expanded to make the significance of the subject more apparent and to secure a better balance of parts. The Introduction and Ap pendix are taken from an article published in Physical Training for January and February of 1912 and in the American Physical Education Review for March and April of the same year. It is hoped that in its present form the book may serve as an introduction to the his tory of physical education, and commend itself to teach ers of that subject who desire a manual for use in nor mal schools, leaders' classes, and summer schools.
