Book Description
This book systematically analyzes how and why China has expectedly lost and then surprisingly gained ground in the quest to solve the complicated environmental problem of air pollution over the past two decades. Yuan Xu shines a light on how China’s sulfur dioxide emissions rose quickly in tandem with rapid economic growth but then dropped to a level not seen for at least four decades. Despite this favorable mitigation outcome, Xu details how this stemmed from a litany of policy stumbles within the Chinese context of no democracy and a lack of sound rule of law. Throughout this book, the author examines China’s environmental governance and strategy and how they shape environmental policy. The chapters weave together a goal-centered governance model that China has adopted of centralized goal setting, decentralized goal attainment, decentralized policy making and implementation. Xu concludes that this model provides compelling evidence that China’s worst environmental years reside in the past. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of Chinese environmental policy and governance, air pollution, climate change and sustainable development, as well as practitioners and policy makers working in these fields. Book Description
This book establishes theories and methods of climate change economics based on the perspective of human development. The book, in two volumes, consists of papers and research reports authored by Pan Jiahua or researchers under his guidance. Professor Pan Jiahua is a leading figure in the field of political economy in climate change and has written extensively. The book is divided into four parts, covering theories, methods, governance, and policies. • The theory part includes the general economics of climate change, the political economy of climate change, carbon emissions, and human development. • The method part covers the economic analysis of greenhouse gas reduction and economics of low-carbon economic development. • The governance is on the design and construction of international climate regimes and China's role and choice. • Finally, the policy part consists of three chapters: policy choices for low-carbon transformation, energy-saving emission reduction, and low-carbon development and adaptation to climate change. The disciplines involved in climate change economics include welfare economics, development economics, international political economics, and property rights economics. In the context of multidisciplinary cross-cutting, the economics of climate change has evolved. The book proposes theories, methods and offers policy solutions and cases. It is of high academic and empirical value for developing countries to strive for fair rights and interests in international climate negotiations, obtain development space, and pursue a low-carbon and ecological economy. Professor Jiahua Pan and his team at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences have contributed greatly to the development of climate change economics in China. Their work has laid the foundation of climate change economics from basic concepts, frameworks, and systems and has a great significance in promoting the development of climate change economics.

Book Description
This book presents an in-depth analysis of the environmental issues raised in the South China Sea Arbitration Awards, which have not attracted as much attention in the Philippines as the “nine-dash line”. Specifically it focuses on the conservation of endangered species and the conservation of fragile ecosystems in the South China Sea. The aims of the book are two-fold. First, it seeks to explain the Philippine perspective on the environmental aspects of its dispute with China. The book reconstructs the Philippine perspective in part by consulting several dozens of the hundreds of documents that the Philippines submitted to the Tribunal. Some of these documents were classified as secret and would thus have never been made available to the public had it not been for the arbitration. Second, it attempts to explain the decisions of the Tribunal on jurisdiction and admissibility as well as the decisions on the merits of the dispute. The book does this by consulting not only the two Awards but also the hundreds of pages of transcripts, expert reports, supplemental submissions and written responses by the Philippines to questions posed by the Tribunal.
