This book is proposed to be a collection of excellently peer-reviewed research from the 2023 14th International Conference on Environmental Science and Development (ICESD 2023), which will be held during May 25-27, 2023, in Xiamen, China. ICESD 2023 will gather innovative academics and industrial experts to a common forum to facilitate the exchange of scientific information and its application in the field of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development. Particularly, a large amount of the research is related to the Water Governance Programme which is an initiative as developed by the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges, United Nations Development Programme, and Coca-Cola China. Recently, effects of energy crisis, water scarcity, environmental pollution, climate change, COVID-19 pandemic, and their interactions on eco-environment and health have caused extraordinary risks in socio-economic and environmental systems (SEE). Such risks feature dynamic, uncertain, and interactive characteristics. In order to tackle these risks, cutting-edge technologies, including both experimental approaches and modeling ones, are desired urgently. Particularly, nature-based solutions will be developed to help achieve net-zero emission and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In addition, data-driven and AI-based methodologies will be developed to facilitate policy analysis of SEE under New Normal scenarios. Furthermore, the combinations of multiple approaches are expected to support the enhancement of SEE resilience in a post-pandemic future. Consequently, ICESD 2023 will include presentations in the field of Water Resources Management, Wastewater Treatment, Drinking Water Safety, Energy and Environmental Systems Analysis, Air Pollution Control, Solid Waste Management, Sustainable Development, Ecosystem Restoration, Climate Change Adaptation, and Socio-economic and Environmental Management. Worldwide demand for sand and gravel is increasing daily, as the need for these materials continues to rise, for example in the construction sector, in land filling and for transportation sector based infrastructural projects. This results in over-extraction of sand from channel beds, and hampers the natural renewal of sediment, geological setup and morphological processes of the riverine system. In India, illegal sand mining (of alluvial channels) and gravel mining (of perennial channels) are two anthropogenic issues that negatively affect the sustainable drainage system. Along the Kangsabati River in India, the consequences of sand mining are very serious. The construction of Mukutmonipur Dam (1958) on the river causes huge sediment deposition along the middle and downstream areas, these same areas are also intensely mined for sand (instream and on the flood plain). Geospatial models are applied in order to better understand the state and the resilience of stream hydraulics, morphological and river ecosystem variables during pre-mining and post-mining stages, using micro-level datasets of the Kangsabati River. The book also includes practicable measures to minimize the environmental consequences of instream mining in respect to optimum sand mining. It discusses the threshold limits of each variable in stream hydraulics, morphological and river ecological regime, and also discusses the most affected variables. Consequently, all outputs will be very useful for students, researchers, academicians, decision makers and practitioners and will facilitate applying these techniques to create models for other river basins.

Japan was ahead of the rest of the world when it introduced intermediate processing of municipal waste by such means as incineration in the 1960s. Owing to the small land area of the country and the difficulty in securing landfill sites, the incineration ratio of municipal combustible waste had reached 100% by the 1990s. Along with the landfill of incineration residues, proprietary technologies such as high salt leachate treatment, desalination treatment, by-product recycling, a focus on the resource of incineration residues, sea surface landfill sites, and covered type landfill sites have spread and developed since then. This book describes the introduction of incineration facilities starting in the 1960s, landfill technology, and issues arising after 1990 following the introduction of the facilities. The necessity of a total system from incineration to landfill is explained as well.
