Book Description
Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) supported the unification of Europe and reflected on this like few other philosophers before or after him. Many of his works are concerned with the present state and future of European culture and humanity. Resisting the “nationalist nonsense” and “politics of dissolution” of his day, he advocated the birth of “good Europeans,” i.e. “supra-national” individuals and the “amalgamation of nations.” Nietzsche, Wagner, Europe analyzes the development of Friedrich Nietzsche’s ideal of European culture based on his musical aesthetics. It does so against the background of contemporary searches for a wider, cultural meaning beyond Europe’s economic-political union. The book claims that Nietzsche always propagated the “aestheticization” of Europe, but that his view on how to achieve this changed as a result of his dramatically altering philosophy of music. The main focus is on Nietzsche’s passion for and later aversion to Wagner’s music, and, in direct connection with this, his surprising embrace of Italian operas as new forms of “Dionysian” music and of Goethe as a model of “Good Europeanism.”

Book Description
"Political hierarchies and ecological crises are often considered to be two different problems. For example, many speak in the present of parallel concerns : climate change and racial injustice. Parker argues rather that these concerns share a common cause in the polis. Polis is an ancient Greek term for the city-state, from which the English term political derives. But polis is more than a term. It is a philosophy according to which there is one complete human body, and that body is meant to govern all other things. In that sense there are not two concerns, but instead one concern : to perceive the ways in which this tradition of the polis constrains the present. Emily Anne Parker bridges the insights of social constructionism and new materialisms to create a philosophy of elemental difference. Difference, rather than needing to be either dismissed based on it social construction or reified in keeping with the hierarchies of the polis, is crucial for addressing the contemporary crises of the polis.""--taken from back cover.

Book Description
Although Jesuit contributions to European expansion in the early modern period have attracted considerable scholarly interest, the legacy of José de Acosta (1540–1600) is still defined by his contributions to natural history. The Theologian and the Empire presents a new biography of Acosta, focused on his participation in colonial and imperial politics. The most important Jesuit active in the Americas in the sixteenth century, Acosta was fundamentally a political operator. His actions on both sides of the Atlantic informed both Peruvian colonial life and the Jesuit order at the dawn of the seventeenth century.

Book Description
After the Zen boom of the 1960s and 1970s, Tibetan Buddhism increasingly captured the West's imagination. Today, entire stadiums fill when the Dalai Lama speaks, training centers mushroom, and books proliferate. Even the most esoteric form of Tibetan Buddhism, rDzogs chen or Great Perfection, has found numerous followers in the West. But the West stands not alone: in communist China, too, this form of Buddhism experienced a kind of camouflaged boom from the 1980s. Monica Esposito (1962-2011), one of Europe’s foremost scholars of Chinese religions, observed this process up close. After her discovery in 1988 of a Buddhist nunnery on Mt. Tianmu in China's Zhejiang province, she lived and practiced under the monastery's founder, a Chinese Zen (Chan) and Tibetan rDzogs chen (Great Perfection) master called Fahai Lama (1920-1991). Dr Esposito's book offers a fascinating glimpse into the daily life and practices of a Chinese Buddhist monastery and into the teachings of a man who not only survived the Cultural revolution as an acupuncturist, Qigong master and recluse in a Daoist cave, but managed to found and build a Chan monastery to promote Tibetan Tantra in a still thoroughly communist environment.
