Book Description
An art lover's bucket list of must-see artworks and art--distilling the country's best artworks and art destinations into interesting, digestible entries featuring the best mix of museums, artists' studios, murals, sculpture parks, and more, throughout the US The compact guide to the top art destinations (and the individual artworks they feature)--from museums to outdoor murals, artist studios to sculpture parks--is for everyone who loves the arts and wants to make the most of their visits to major institutions and art sites. This jam-packed primer includes fan-favorites and well-known and important artists, as well as the best examples of art from around the world that are available to see in the United States. The designations and works are diverse in geography and media and represent contributions to the arts by an equally diverse and inclusive range of artists, as well as significant moments in the history of American art. Organized by geographical region, the book zeroes in on the best in every category featured in major institutions as well as off-the-beaten path places that are not to be missed, including the best Mexican murals, the best examples of WPA work, best Old Master paintings, best contemporary land art, etc. For museums, the book focuses on extraordinary collections and works, distilling thousands or artworks down to a few choice selections. In every case, the book highlights artworks people can't see anywhere else, and that are worth the trip--from the important rooms at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Ellsworth Kelly-designed chapel in Texas; prehistoric cave drawings in Utah; the Taos Pueblo and Art Colony in New Mexico; Donald Judd's Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas; and N.C. and Andrew Wyeth's home studios in Pennsylvania are just a few examples. Many artists and places will be household names, others not as well-known (but no less interesting or compelling). Eschewing a college textbook-like set of lists, instead each entry lays out why the reader should care.

The Expanding Roles of Chinese Americans in U.S.-China Relations
Author: Peter Koehn
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317456955
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 352
Book Description
This book addresses the historical and contemporary involvement of Chinese Americans from diverse walks of life in U.S.-China relations. The contributors present new evidence and fresh perspectives on familiar and unfamiliar national and transnational networks - including families, businesspersons, community newspapers, students, lobbyists, philanthropists, and scientists - and consider the likely future impact of such contacts on the most important bilateral relationship at the start of the new millennium. The volume makes a multidisciplinary contribution to understanding the extensive and vital roles and promise of Chinese Americans at this critical juncture in U.S.-China relations, and to revealing the importance of migrants as actors in contemporary global politics. The assessments shared by the contributors suggest that the nature and scope of the Chinese American involvement, particularly in global civil society networks, increasingly will determine the outcome of state-to-state relations between the United States and the PRC.

The U.S. City in Transition
Author: Barbara Hahn
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 366264861X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 183
Book Description
The U.S. city is undergoing constant change. In the East and Midwest, most cities were founded as trading posts on waterways. They boomed during the industrial era and reached their population peak in the mid-20th century, before suburbanization and deindustrialization caused them to decline in importance. Traces of decay were everywhere, and the prognosis for the future was conceivably poor. As Barbara Hahn shows in her book, this trend now seems to have been broken: Things are looking up again for the US city. Some of the former industrial cities have succeeded in structural change. In the south and west of the country, cities have developed into new growth centers. However, not all cities are benefiting from this positive development, and many continue to shrink at an alarming rate. As the author points out, similar processes such as neoliberalisation, deregulation, privatisation and gentrification can be observed in all cities, regardless of their location and level of development. Due to the large number of didactically prepared graphics, the book is suitable as a study read for students and scholars. The characteristics of the U.S. city, which are elaborated on the basis of current examples, as well as the illustrative photos also illustrate the change of the U.S. city to the interested reader.
