Book Description
In 2000 a major archaeological rescue project took place at Zeugma in order to learn as much as possible about this ancient city before it was flooded by the Birecik Dam. Many of the discoveries, particularly the outstanding mosaics, have stunned the archaeological world and caught the imagination of the general public. This volume publishes the interim reports from this season of excavation, presenting us with a glimpse of some of the discoveries, including Hellenistic and Roman upper-class houses, shops, bathhouses and military structures. Particular attention is paid here to the life-size bronze statue of Mars (complete with silver and gold eyes), inscriptions of Antiochus I of Commagene, the Roman military presence and, of course, the marvellous wall-paintings and mosaics which are presented in colour photographs. Five reports are presented here, one of which is in French. This study provides us with a tantalising glimpse of what is to come.

Book Description
Updated since the decision to begin Turkey's admission to the European Union. Turkey is a country in a state of flux, swept along by an extraordinary process of change. In the last few years, a series of far-reaching political and economic reforms has swept away much of the old order which ruled the country for so long. Some people call it a second Turkish revolution. But resistance to reform remains strong. Pressure for change has come from ordinary people fed up with the old ways; it's also been motivated by the dominant issue of Turkish political life - the long pursuit of membership of the European Union. And yet Turkey remains a mystery to many outsiders; a complex country hard to understand. It's secular and Muslim, Western and Eastern, democratic and authoritarian, all at the same time. This book examines the potential and the problems of the new Turkey, and the expectations of the people who live there, drawing on first-hand interviews and observations gathered over several years.

Book Description
Dr Sagona has conducted many seasons of excavation and survey work in eastern Turkey. This extravagantly illustrated book traces the history of the region from the beginning of settled life (c.11,000-5,500 BC) to the spread of Islam and the resplendent Ottoman period that followed. Among its fascinating subjects are details of the obsidian trade, the emergence of agriculture and stock-breeding; the development of metallurgy; the rise of a merchant class; the constantly changing political boundaries under the Urartians, Hittites and Persians; the Roman and Christian periods; and the Arab Conquest followed by the invasion of the Seljuks and their wonderful arts. The text is supported by the rare and beautiful photography of the sites and monuments, and of artefacts produced by the many different peoples who have inhabited this fascinating region.

Book Description
Fifteen papers focus on the active and dynamic uses of images during the first millennium AD. They bring together an international group of scholars who situate the period’s visual practices within their political, religious, and social contexts. The contributors present a diverse range of evidence, including mosaics, sculpture, and architecture from all parts of the Mediterranean, from Spain in the west to Jordan in the east. Contributions span from the depiction of individuals on funerary monuments through monumental epigraphy, Constantine’s expropriation and symbolic re-use of earlier monuments, late antique collections of Classical statuary, and city personifications in mosaics to the topic of civic prosperity during the Theodosian period and dynastic representation during the Umayyad dynasty. Together they provide new insights into the central role of visual culture in the constitution of late antique societies.
