Pages : 43
Book Description
"This report, "Natural Values Criteria and Assessment of the Identification of Protected Areas in the Yukon", was written by the Yukon Protected Areas Secretariat (YPAS), Department of Renewable Resources, Yukon Government. It describes the natural values assessment process for the identification of core goal protected areas in the Yukon. The purpose of and process for establishing core goal 1 protected areas is described in the Yukon Protected Areas Strategy, which was approved by the Yukon Government in December 1998. This report is intended as a technical and scientific document detailing the natural values assessments. A companion summary of this report describes the concepts presented here without the technical detail. This report has been subject to a thorough scientific review by experts in the fields of conservation biology, ecology, and protected area design. The overall response from the scientific review was that this report reflects the current thinking on protected areas planning in Canada and that it will advance protected area assessment and design in the Yukon. The report has also been distributed for review in the Yukon Government. The comments and concerns raised in the scientific and government review have been considered and where possible, incorporated into this interim final report. The Deputy Minister of the Yukon Department of Renewable Resources has reviewed and approved the summary paper of this technical report. In an effort to advance the science, reviewers have recommended that we build into the report practical approaches to implementing the assessment criteria. This recommendation will be addressed and incorporated into the technical report over the next six months as protected areas of interest are assessed and identified for the Northeast and Southeast Yukon. Therefore, this report will be re-published in Spring 2001 taking into account the lessons learned from applying the approach as described below. (Au)"--ASTIS [online] bibliography.
