Book Description
When the late great Sean Body, founder of Helter Skelter, commissioned this book he wanted the style to be that of 'two mates having a chat over a pint'. Parker, with O'Shea, has captured that brief brilliantly in a book that features many unique anecdotes about the Sex Pistols from inception to (numerous) comeback gigs. Parker's close relationship to Malcolm McLaren, Glenn Matlock and Anne Ritchie gives him a privileged inside view of the band and both authors have grown up the Sex Pistols providing the soundtrack to their lives. The book has to cover the obvious ground, such as the infamous Grundy interview or the death of Sid Vicious in New York, but it is the new anecdotes that will appeal to fans -- anecdotes supplied by people who were there, such as the roadie Roadent who quit working for the Clash for the Pistols and therefore is well placed to comment on the feud between the two bands. The many re-formations are also covered. Soundcheck Books is proud to have licensed this never before published work from Helter Skelter. First mooted in 2005, Parker's stock has since risen by his film work -- particularly as the director of Who Killed Nancy. He has fully updated the work, including a touching tribute to McLaren who died in 2010. There hasn't really been much of note written about the band since Jon Savage's England's Dreaming, making Young Flesh Required timely and relevant. The book has an 8 page plate section of colour and b/w images as well as 35 b/w images of memorabilia in with the text - many have never been seen in a book before.

Secrets of the Flesh
Author: Judith Thurman
Publisher: Ballantine Books
ISBN: 0345371038
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 636
Book Description
A dazzling biography of the French literary superstar Colette, who is also the subject of a major motion picture. “A fine and intelligent biography of Colette, with her long tumultuous life and the great body of her work scrupulously considered and presented with style.”—The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice) NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • WINNER OF THE LOS ANGELES TIMES BOOK AWARD • NOMINATED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD Having spent her childhood in the shadow of an overpowering mother, Colette escaped at age twenty into a turbulent marriage with the sexy, unscrupulous Willy—a literary charlatan who took credit for her bestselling Claudine novels. Weary of Willy’s sexual domination, Colette pursued an extremely public lesbian love affair with a niece of Napoleon’s. At forty, she gave birth to a daughter who bored her, at forty-seven she seduced her teenage stepson, and in her seventies she contributed to the pro-Nazi press during the Occupation, even though her beloved third husband, a Jew, had been arrested by the Gestapo. And all the while, this incomparable woman poured forth a torrent of masterpieces, including Gigi, Sido, Cheri, and Break of Day. Judith Thurman, author of the National Book Award-winning biography of Isak Dinesen, portrays Colette as a thoroughly modern woman: frank in her desires, fierce in her passions, forever reinventing herself. Rich with delicious gossip and intimate revelations, shimmering with grace and intelligence, Secrets of the Flesh is one of the great biographies of our time. Chosen as one of the Best Books of the Year by The Village Voice and Newsday “[Colette] has been the subject of . . . a half-dozen significant biographies over the past thirty years. Yet this one by Judith Thurman will be hard to top. . . . Its prose is smoothly urbane, at times aphoristic, always captivating.”—The Washington Post Book World “It will stand as literature in its own right.”—Richard Bernstein, The New York Times “[An] essential biography by a stylish writer of great sympathetic understanding and intellectual authority.”—Philip Roth

Flesh and Word
Author: Sarah Künzler
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110455870
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 460
Book Description
Bodies and their role in cultural discourse have been a constant focus in the humanities and social sciences in recent years, but comparatively few studies exist about Old Norse-Icelandic or early Irish literature. This study aims to redress this imbalance and presents carefully contextualised close readings of medieval texts. The chapters focus on the role of bodies in mediality discourse in various contexts: that of identity in relation to ideas about self and other, of inscribed and marked skin and of natural bodily matters such as defecation, urination and menstruation. By carefully discussing the sources in their cultural contexts, it becomes apparent that medieval Scandinavian and early Irish texts present their very own ideas about bodies and their role in structuring the narrated worlds of the texts. The study presents one of the first systematic examinations of bodies in these two literary traditions in terms of body criticism and emphasises the ingenuity and complexity of medieval texts.

The Weight of All Flesh
Author: Eric Santner
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190254106
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 313
Book Description
Eric Santner offers a radically new interpretation of Marx's labor theory of value as one concerned with the afterlife of political theology in secular modernity. What Marx characterized as the dual character of the labor embodied in the commodity, he argues, is the doctrine of the King's Two Bodies transferred from the political theology of sovereignty to the realm of political economy. This genealogy, leading from the fetishism of the royal body to the fetishism of the commodity, also suggests a new understanding of the irrational core at the center of economic busyness today, its 24/7 pace. The frenetic negotiations of our busy-bodies continue and translate into the doxology of everyday life the liturgical labor that once sustained the sovereign's glory. Maintaining that an effective critique of capitalist political economy must engage this liturgical dimension, Santner proposes a counter-activity, which he calls "paradoxological." With commentaries by Bonnie Honig, Peter Gordon, and Hent de Vries, an introduction by Kevis Goodman, and a response from Santner, this important new book by a leading cultural theorist and scholar of German literature, cinema, and history will interest readers of political theory, literature and literary theory, and religious studies.
