Teens from across time are pulled into the twenty-fourth century for an interstellar rescue mission in this action-packed science fiction series debut. Life is easier in the year 2345, since humanity has created a utopia with no more war, disease, or crime. Only now, Earth is in a dire situation, one which the adults are powerless to help. A group of teenagers step up to the challenge, but they’ll need help. . . . Enter Operation Hourglass . . . A team of heroes—champions of their times, spanning history—is assembled, each of them known to have the skills, grit, and instincts to handle crisis. From the twentieth and twenty-first-centuries: a high-school basketball star and a smalltown brainiac. Joining them: a tenth-century Viking and a young thief from nineteenth-century London. Together they must rescue a human star settlement from mysterious, threatening, three-eyed aliens. But even if they survive and successfully complete their mission, there’s still the matter of returning everyone back to their pasts . . .

A Guide to English Grammar
Author: Bessie Brooks
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation

Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 548
Book Description
There is elements of language that allow us to better understand the world. Abstractions in language help us classify ideas into groups so that we may generalize or specify parts within a label. For instance a car is made up of many parts, such as the engine, the wheels, the body, etc. We call it a car instead of of "an engine driving the wheels with a body attached to carry passengers", to make it easier for us not only to transfer the though within our mind, but also to others. Also, by calling it a car, we have differentiated the object from a train or a bike, both being other modes of transportation. Abstractions are part of our mental girds that help us by chopping reality into fragments so that we may organize it and put it into our grasp of understanding. Something such as the temperature cannot be measured because it is infinitely variable. It is just our enviroment reduced to numbers so that we can conceive it in our minds. Again, our world is divided into pieces so the human mind can understand it bit buy bit. From seeing a car to measuring the temperature, language offers an explanation to our experience and it is a powerful tool to help us think.

User-friendliness of verb syntax in pedagogical dictionaries of English
Author: Anna Dziemianko
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 3110941090
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 245
Book Description
The study examines the user-friendliness of sources of verb syntax in monolingual English learners' dictionaries. It is both theoretical and empirical in nature. The theoretical part is based on an analysis of consecutive editions of major pedagogical dictionaries of English in paper form. The empirical part relies on statistical analyses of numerical data yielded by comprehensive research, which was based, in the main, on the experimental method. In the experiment, the user-friendliness of sources of verb syntax in learners' dictionaries was measured by the frequency with which the properly identified and useful syntactic information was located in particular entry components. The sources of syntactic information in the entries compiled especially for the purpose of the experiment were the ones which featured in the major pedagogical dictionaries most recent at the time of the study. 606 subjects, divided into two groups of different proficiency in English, underlined in the manipulated entries the syntactic information which they considered helpful in answering multiple choice questions. The most user-friendly solutions, both coded and uncoded ones, are recommended in the final part of the book.
