Book Description
'Every thoughtful person, concerned for the future of this country, needs to read this book.' - Prof. Irfan Habib Yaadon ke Bikhre Moti, the Hindi translation of the bestselling Remnants of a Separation, is a unique attempt to revisit the Partition through objects that refugees carried with them across the border. These belongings absorbed the memory of a time and place, remaining latent and undisturbed for generations. They now speak of their owner's pasts as they emerge as testaments to the struggle, sacrifice, pain and belonging at an unparalleled moment in history. A string of pearls gifted by a maharaja, carried from Dalhousie to Lahore, reveals the grandeur of a life that once was. A notebook of poems, brought from Lahore to Kalyan, shows one woman's determination to pursue the written word despite the turmoil around her. The product of years of research, this book is an alternative history of the Partition - the first and only one told through material memory that makes the event tangible even seven decades later.

Book Description
This Day That Year as a title came from a TV program of the 90s called “This Week That Year”, that I used to watch on TV. I could relate to it very well as I remembered the release dates of most of the movies of the late 60s and early 70s and when the host spoke about it, I went down my memory lane and loved the experience. Once I became part of Facebook in 2009, I found a great forum to share my experiences of movie releases in Bombay then and now Mumbai. I found a lot of like-minded people who could relate to my post and shared their experiences and thoughts as comments. Quite a few of them encouraged me to share it with a larger audience and hence suggested publishing it. I never thought of doing it but when people kept telling me regularly to do it, I decided to give it a try, and here comes my experiences and thoughts of the movies released in the late 60s and early 70s. Hope you like what you read, though many of the statements would look repetitive. But do accept the experiences of a teenager who turns into a man in 1973.

This collection is about those on the wrong side of the border. Apart from offering a perspective on displaced people and communities, the stories talk about people as religious and linguistic minorities in post-Partition India and Pakistan. These narratives offer insights into individual experience, and break the silence of the collective sphere.

Book Description
Wild—untamed, hostile, remote. Yet, wild can be gentle, welcoming, and inspiring, too. This is the wild that preoccupies biologist Shankar Raman as he writes about trees and bamboos, hornbills and elephants, leopards and myriad other species. Species found not just out there in far wildernesses—from the Thar desert to the Kalakad rainforests, from Narcondam Island to Namdapha—but amid us, in gardens and cities, in farms, along roadsides. And he writes about the forces that gouge land and disfigure landscapes, rip trees and shred forests, pollute rivers and contaminate the air, slaughter animals along roads and rail tracks—impelling a motivation to care, and to conserve nature. Through this collection of essays, Shankar Raman attempts to blur, if not dispel, the sharp separation between humans and nature, to lead you to discover that the wild heart of India beats in your chest, too.

Book Description
WINNER of the 2022 INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WORKING WOMEN AWARD for BEST FICTION OF THE YEAR! LONGLISTED for 2022 DUBLIN LITERARY AWARD! She rose from commoner to become the last reigning queen of India’s Sikh Empire. In this dazzling novel, based on true-life events, bestselling author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni presents the unforgettable story of Jindan, who transformed herself from daughter of the royal kennel keeper to powerful monarch. Sharp-eyed, stubborn, and passionate, Jindan was known for her beauty. When she caught the eye of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, she was elevated to royalty, becoming his youngest and last queen—and his favorite. And when her son, barely six years old, unexpectedly inherited the throne, Jindan assumed the regency. She transformed herself from pampered wife to warrior ruler, determined to protect her people and her son’s birthright from the encroaching British Empire. Defying tradition, she stepped out of the zenana, cast aside the veil, and conducted state business in public, inspiring her subjects in two wars. Her power and influence were so formidable that the British, fearing an uprising, robbed the rebel queen of everything she had, but nothing crushed her indomitable will. An exquisite love story of a king and a commoner, a cautionary tale about loyalty and betrayal, a powerful parable of the indestructible bond between mother and child, and an inspiration for our times, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s novel brings alive one of the most fearless women of the nineteenth century, one whose story cries out to be told.

Book Description
On 24 March 2020, after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, a complete nationwide lockdown was announced in India. In addition to other restrictions, which included suspension of air travel and long- and short-distance modes of transport, it was decided that the Indian Railways would no longer operate. The shutting down of the almost 68,000 kilometre-long railway network severed, in many cases, the only link for people with their home states. The Great Shutdown closely examines the repercussions of these decisions, the resultant uncertainty and emotional crisis for millions of people, especially migrant workers, who were separated from their families at a time when the threat of an unknown disease loomed large. It chronicles the COVID-19 regulations that were enforced during the lockdown, the different phases of unlocking and the second wave, and their humanitarian challenges. It also talks about the alternatives that could have been explored to keep travel going, which would have saved countless people a lot of suffering.
