Book Description
Excerpt from New Business Speller Not a few new words have come into the language of recent years. Some old words, little used in past years, have come into general use. The latest edition of Webster's unabridged makes use of some new diacritical characters, and makes some changes in pronunciation and definition that should be noted. These are the technical reasons for the appearance of a new business speller. The technical reasons above enumerated are alone sufficient to justify the bringing out of a new book. There are other reasons, however, that have made the New Business Speller a practical necessity. Commercial education has developed. Courses are more advanced than they were, and students are of a higher grade. Business men are yearly becoming more critical. The commercial education wave has brought the teaching of spelling into the high schools and academies. The whole field of business education is broader, and more is required in spelling, as well as in the other branches. For these reasons the tendency has been to increase the number of words in the spelling books. New Business Speller has 6,000 words, or about 1.000 words more than any other. So carefully have these words been selected, however, that every word in the book will be seen to be a useful one. The repetition of words has been worked out in such painstaking detail that, while all needed repetition for review has been given, the book is not bulky, nor is there any wasteful, useless repetition. The day of the "word list" speller has passed. The unscientific compilations of miscellaneous words that in times past have paraded under the name of speller cannot be expected to last. The subject of spelling can be taught as scientifically, with the same high regard for completeness, systematic development, and effective treatment, as any other school subject. The aim of the New Business Speller is to give such a treatment. Note the following features: 1. There are 200 lessons. This provides for forty weeks of five days each. 2. Many new words. Instances are Lesson 122, automobile terms, and Lesson 124, aeroplane terms. 3. The total number of words is 6,000. This includes all words in daily use and many words that are important but arc only occasionally used. 4. In the selection of words special attention has been paid to the needs of high school students. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Business Speller and Vocabulary In offering a new business speller, it seems desirable to indicate some of the features in which the book differs from other publications and to suggest methods in which it may be employed. It is in some ways desirable that words in a spelling book should be presented in a manner as nearly like the way they appear in ordinary print as is possible. In endeavoring to do this there has been a tendency in recent years to neglect syllabication, that other great aid to spelling. In this book the words are divided into syllables, but, in order to retain the similarity to original print, hyphens are not inserted between the syllables. It is undesirable to respell more than is necessary, for in respelling false ideas are given as to the proper spelling of the word. Only those words have been respelled where there would be doubt as to the pronunciation. Some general principles regarding pronunciation of vowels are given in the beginning of the book, and an application of these principles has made it necessary to respell only a comparatively few words. No word has been respelled which is in strict conformity with these general principles, unless it is a word which is generally mispronounced. Each lesson is given a separate page, and there is enough material in the book for a lesson a day for forty weeks. Attention is called to the fact that the words in the first sixty-four lessons are grouped in accordance with certain rules for spelling. While many words in English violate rules of spelling, a knowledge of the application of certain rules is a distinct aid to proper spelling. The reading of a rule is of very little use, but when fifty or one hundred words applying the role are studied, the teacher, by calling repeated attention to the rule, may make it so emphatic that the student will thereafter apply it. The book will be found unusually complete in the common business terms, and in the more common technical words used in the various occupations and professions.
