Book Description
The implosion of the Soviet Union was the culmination of a gripping game played out between two men who intensely disliked each other and had different concepts for the future. Mikhail Gorbachev, a sophisticated and urbane reformer, sought to modernize and preserve the USSR; Boris Yeltsin, a coarse and a hard drinking "bulldozer," wished to destroy the union and create a capitalist Russia. The defeat of the August 1991 coup attempt, carried out by hardline communists, shook Gorbachev's authority and was a triumph for Yeltsin. But it took four months of intrigue and double-dealing before the Soviet Union collapsed and the day arrived when Yeltsin could hustle Gorbachev out of the Kremlin, and move in as ruler of Russia. Conor O'Clery has written a unique and truly suspenseful thriller of the day the Soviet Union died. The internal power plays, the shifting alliances, the betrayals, the mysterious three colonels carrying the briefcase with the nuclear codes, and the jockeying to exploit the future are worthy of John Le Carr' or Alan Furst. The Cold War's last act was a magnificent dark drama played out in the shadows of the Kremlin.

Book Description
Where are you from? Where is your home? Do you miss home? These are questions that Efa E. Etoroma—born in Nigeria—has frequently been asked since moving to Canada in 1978. In this autoethnography, the Concordia University of Edmonton professor examines his views on what home really is and his struggles to feel a true sense of belonging anywhere he has lived. Explained with candor and occasional vulnerability, Home: Reflections on Marginality and Belonging is told from the perspective of a marginalized Black, Christian immigrant, but his story is relatable to anyone who has felt alienated or had a crisis of identity. Efa shares his personal experiences of growing up in post-colonial northern Nigeria, raised Anglican amongst mostly Muslims, and fleeing to the southern region as a child, shortly after the start of the Nigerian Civil War. Then he recounts moving to Canada to attend school but staying upon meeting his future Canadian-born wife. He explores his connection with Black Pentecostal churches as well as his thoughts on grieving, death, and aging away from his homeland. Supporting these experiences, Efa incorporates an abundance of research for a wider cultural and social context. Home: Reflections on Marginality and Belonging is part snapshot of the author’s life—a way of identifying who he is and where he is from—part answer to the questions, “Where are you from” and “Where is your home,” and part exploration of the micro-level contradictions of social change brought about by modern society.

Book Description
Recently there has been a renewed interest in moral inquiry among American scholars in a variety of disciplines. This collection of accessible essays by scholars in philosophy, political theory, psychology, history, literary studies, sociology, religious studies, anthropology, and legal studies affords a view of the current state of moral inquiry in the American academy, and it offers fresh departures for ethically informed, interdisciplinary scholarship. Seeking neither to reduce values to facts nor facts to values, these essays aim to foster discussion about inquiry and moral judgment, and demonstrate that moral inquiry need not be either dispassionate and value-free or moralistic and preachy.

Book Description
The failure to adequately respond on the part of the major Western superpowers to the atrocities in the Balkans constitutes a major moral and political scandal. In Genocide after Emotion Mestrovic and the contributors thoroughly interrogate the war, its media coverage and response in the West. The result is alarming, both for the progress of the war and for the condition of our society today: the authors argue that the West is suffering from a "postemotional" condition - we are beyond caring about anything anymore.

Book Description
As the years move on I think many of us don't really consider the subtle but sometimes enormouschanges that can take place in the human mind over the course of time. We often hear people say, 'I'd love to be eighteen again and know what I know now'¦' but how many of us would want to put our past lives out there for the whole world to see; especially when the path that we've walked was chest deep in pain and turmoil? It was in January of 2006 that I decided to write PIECES OF MY PATH. What precipitated my putting finger to keyboard was located in a cardboard box, stashed away and wrapped in a black garbage bag high upon a shelf in the guest bedroom closet. I was thinking a lot about my 'dark days' and how far I had come from those crippling depressed times in the early 90's so I decided to pull down that black bag filled with memories and take a peek back into a bleak, yet rewarding, past.
