This report presents the findings of a computerised self-completion questionnaire included in the 2001 British Crime Survey to determine the nature and extent of inter-personal violence in England and Wales. The results of the survey show that inter-personal violence is widespread: approximately one third of the population has been affected by inter-personal violence at some time in their lives; one in twenty women have experienced serious sexual assault; and one in five women and one in ten men have been victims of domestic violence. The results also indicate that there are high levels of repeat victimisation, especially in cases of domestic violence.

She argues that the laws can be divided into those that treat women similarly to men (defined as 'inclusive' laws) and those that treat women differently ('exclusive' laws). This book uses various theoretical perspectives to summarize what is known about the multiple causes of men's violence against women, and stresses the importance of identifying men's risk factors. The preliminary multivariate model identifies four content areas: macrosocietal; biological; gender role socialization; and relational factors to explain men's violence against women. Within these four content areas the editors develop thirteen preliminary hypotheses about the causes of men's violence against women, which are critiqued by the contributors in the subsequent chapters.
