Includes the Franco-Prussian Map Pack with over 35 maps, plans and diagrams of the engagements of the war Julius von Verdy du Vernois was a noted Prussian General and strategist, he served with great distinction in the Austro-Prussian war of 1866 and participated in the climactic battle of Königgratz. He was appointed to the General Staff in 1867 as head of the intelligence section becoming a close assistant and confidant of the great Graf von Moltke. His chief fame rests on his service with the German Royal headquarters as one of high-ranking “demi-gods” of the General staff who enabled von Moltke to keep control of the massive German army as they destroyed the French armies so rapidly and successfully. “THESE “Personal Recollections of the War of 1870-71,” now first issued in book form, have already been partially published in articles which appeared in the “Deutsche Rundschau” in 1874 and 1895. Going again through my letters and the notes in my diary of that period, I have here and there added additional matter. “But still they are nowise intended to form an exhaustive description of the war, or even a complete record of personal experiences. Their publication is due to the renewed interest in those great events which the twenty-five years’ jubilee has awakened, and their object is a limited one, viz. to give an insight into the daily life of the Royal Headquarters Staff during those times. The opinions held and mental impressions formed at particular moments with regard to the great events of the war are recorded for the most part in the form in which they were noted down at the time, without regard to whether, in the light of better information, they subsequently proved correct or wide of the mark. For thus only can the “Recollections” give a faithful picture of the views obtaining at particular junctures.”- von Verdy

The Prussian army invented modern war processes, and Helmuth von Moltke (1800 - 1891) was the first modern war planner. His accomplishment was to develop, bring to fruition and validate the war processes invented during his lifetime. In this book, Bucholz examines Moltke's work and the processes he utilised in each of the three wars of German unification: against Denmark (1864), Austria (1865) and France (1870-71). Moltke's achievements have become a legacy for modern military strategists. The procedures he developed have been used in all of the wars of the twentieth century - the Persian Gulf War of 1991 may be its most interesting example - beacuse they respond to the size, space, time and technology mandates of industrial mass warfare. A fascinating account of the dramatic events leading up to the Siege and the four month siege itself. The Siege of Paris from September 1870 to the city’s capitulation in January 1871 was the result of Louis Napoleon III, Emperor of France’s disastrous decision to declare war on Prussia. The Prussian Army of King William I proved vastly superior to their adversaries. After victories at Metz and Sedan, the Prussians marched on Paris virtually unopposed. By 19 September the city was encircled with the population discontented, disillusioned and rebellious. Civil disorder was rife as starvation took a grip. On the inevitable surrender in late January and the declaration of the German Empire, France’s humiliation was complete. This in turn led to the temporary establishment of the Paris Commune an embryonic communist government, and civil war. As well as providing a vivid description of the siege and fighting, the author of this well researched account analyses the long-term effects be they social, military and political both on France and wider Europe. He argues that while the siege was not particularly costly in terms of human life, its legacy was the reduction of French global influence, the growth of German militarism, the evolution of international communism and changes in the world order.
