Book Description
A fast-paced, fly-on-the-wall story of courage, endurance, bungling, rows and cheating in sport's greatest marathon In 1987, the Tour de France was won by Irishman Stephen Roche. It was the first time the champion had hailed from outside the Continent or the States and the first time in 20 years a British team - ANC Halfords - had competed in the world's toughest and craziest race. Jeff Connor not only stayed with the British team but also found himself an unofficial team member. In this long-awaited new edition of Wide-Eyed and Legless, now widely regarded as a classic, Connor describes what it takes to compete, survive and win during those 26 days of gruelling effort. Alongside the heroism and athleticism, he reveals the extraordinary amounts of chicanery, from pulling riders along to illicit drug use. Time has not dimmed the impact of this eye-opening and entertaining close-up look at the supreme endurance event, and Wide-Eyed and Legless is destined to be acclaimed by a new generation of cycling enthusiasts. Jeff Connor's other books include the definitive story of the Busby Babes, The Lost Babes, and Up and Down Under, an account of the 2001 British Lions tour.

Book Description
This is the first-ever critical work on Jack Rosenthal, the award-winning British television dramatist. His career began with Coronation Street in the 1960s and he became famous for his popular sitcoms, including The Lovers and The Dustbinmen. During what is often known as the golden age of British television drama, Rosenthal wrote such plays as The Knowledge, The Chain, Spend, Spend, Spend and Ptang, Yang, Kipperbang, as well as the pilot for the series London's Burning. This study offers a close analysis of all Rosenthal's best-known works, drawing on archival material as well as interviews with his collaborators and cast members. It traces the events that informed his writing, ranging from his comic take on the permissive society; of the 1960s, through to recession in the 1970s and Thatcherism in the 1980s. Rosenthal's distinctive brand of humour and its everyday surrealism is contrasted throughout with the work of his contemporaries, including Dennis Potter, Alan Bleasdale and Johnny Speight, and his influence on contemporary television and film is analysed. Rosenthal is not usually placed in the canon of Anglo-Jewish writing but the book argues this case by focusing on his prize-winning Plays for Today The Evacuees and Bar Mitzvah Boy. This book will appeal to students and researchers in Television, Film and Cultural Studies, as well as those interested in contemporary drama and Jewish Studies.

Book Description
"In 1971 Deric Longden's wife Diana fell ill with the mysterious disorder known as ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis). She was unable to move without a wheelchair, and was in almost constant pain. Equally distressing, perhaps, was the fact that every doctor she saw was unable to diagnose what was wrong with her. Deric, devoting more and more time to looking after Diana, watched his business gradually fail, and had to neglect his developing career as a broadcaster. He became house husband, nurse and caretaker of the women he loved. Diana's Story is told by a writer who can transform the bleakest moment with his warmth and wit. It is an extraordinary funny account of a marriage based on love and on an exceptional sense of humour."

Book Description
John Parker was born an Ayrshire farmers boy on the 1st of January 1964 in the West of Scotland. After travelling the world, mainly by himself, he now prefers to divide his time between his home in Scotland and his house on La Isla de la Juventud, Cuba. Parkers interests are writing comedy, travelling and photography. While preferring to tutor himself in his writing dexterity or any other intellectual allegiance, he acquired a handy knowledge of various languages to assist him on foreign shores. As he backpacked all over the world, this bilingual adroitness gave Parker a different perspective and outlook on the many places he saw and the people he met along the way. Zimbabwe is the second of Parkers books after writing Escape Route, which is about the many ridiculously comical tight spots he experienced during his backpacking journeys. On one of Parkers many digressions he sojourned all over Africa, and his observations there, along with his farming background, inspired him to write this book. Zimbabwe is a fictional book of satirical humour about a country ruled by a dictator. The story denotes a wry and often cruel dnouement regarding the consequences of dictatorships, and also presents a supposition on how the lives of the citizens within them are affected. The humorous characters within the literary composition will tend to veer the reader towards the hypothesis that both black and white people are guilty of a slightly tribal built-in prejudicial disposition, and it also reveals how fickle the human race can be. However, its all written in the name of comedy, and the moral of the book is to demonstrate the instability in character that makes up the human psyche and to find the humour that lies beneath. Many literary critics are now commenting that there isnt enough humour being written nowadays. Zimbabwe is unique and others who have read it thought it was hilarious, written by an author with a sharp sense of humour, you will have a laugh or two if you read on.

Book Description
A smart, hilarious, and lavishly illustrated guide to the most euphemised word in the English language: Drunk A record-breaking assemblage of 2,964 different ways to say "drunk." Tipsy, roasted, three sheets, whazooed and Boris Yeltsinned are just the beginning....With an introduction by the wise-guy lexicographer himself, Paul Dickson, and illustrations by renowned artist Brian Rea. Dickson, who holds the Guiness World Record for collecting the most words for being, er, not sober, not only provides a dictionary of those words, but reveals why there are so many synonyms for being "drunk," and how he came to collect more of them than anyone else. The terms are annotated, too, and lushly illustrated, explaining the twist and turns of a language that has thousands of ways to say the same thing. How, for example, does a word like "blotto" go from the lips of P.G. Wodehouse, into the writings of Edmund Wilson, before landing with Otto from The Simpson's ("My name is Otto, I like to get blotto").
