Book Description
Goddess as Nature makes a significant contribution to elucidating the meaning of a female and feminist deity at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Bridging the gap between the emergent religious discourse of thealogy - discourse about the Goddess - and a range of analytical concerns in the philosophy of religion, the author argues that thealogy is not as incoherent as many of its critics claim. By developing a close reading of the reality-claims embedded within a range of thealogical texts, one can discern an ecological and pantheistic concept of deity and reality that is metaphysically novel and in need of constructive philosophical, thealogical and scholarly engagement. Philosophical thealogy is, in an age concerned with re-conceiving nature in terms of agency, chaos, complexity, ecological networks and organicism, both an active possibility and a remarkably valuable academic, feminist and religious endeavour.

Book Description
This landmark work presents the most illuminating portrait we have to date of goddesses and sacred female imagery in Western culture—from prehistory to contemporary goddess movements. Beautifully written, lucidly conceived, and far-ranging in its implications, this work will help readers gain a better appreciation of the complexity of the social forces— mostly androcentric—that have shaped the symbolism of the sacred feminine. At the same time, it charts a new direction for finding a truly egalitarian vision of God and human relations through a feminist-ecological spirituality. Rosemary Radford Ruether begins her exploration of the divine feminine with an analysis of prehistoric archaeology that challenges the popular idea that, until their overthrow by male-dominated monotheism, many ancient societies were matriarchal in structure, governed by a feminine divinity and existing in harmony with nature. For Ruether, the historical evidence suggests the reality about these societies is much more complex. She goes on to consider key myths and rituals from Sumerian, Babylonian, Egyptian, and Anatolian cultures; to examine the relationships among gender, deity, and nature in the Hebrew religion; and to discuss the development of Mariology and female mysticism in medieval Catholicism, and the continuation of Wisdom mysticism in Protestanism. She also gives a provocative analysis of the meeting of Aztec and Christian female symbols in Mexico and of today's neo-pagan movements in the United States.

Book Description
This book is only a beginning toward sketching out some parameters for a Wiccan theology that goes past the lists of goddesses and gods and the ritual how-to books and simplified grimoires which are readily available to seekers. The divine adapts and is expressed through humanity, through our societies, through individuals, shifting from moment to moment. The infinite is expressed through the finite, the finite is fully realized only through its connection to the infinite. We violate the beauty of the flow of this divine spark and this connection when we freeze revelation, or we say to the goddesses: "thus far and no further!" Formal theology develops later than practices and rituals, which develop out of myth, and myths in turn develop out of experiences. The experiences which lead to the emergence of temples and institutions out of this broader religious movement (the great majority of whose adherents are not involved in temples) are the seed, although the tree as it grows adapts to its surroundings and to the needs of the members. Rather more like a garden or an ecosystem than a single plant, to stretch the metaphor. Wicca is a new religious movement, which is just running up against the limits of having a completely self-trained and self-appointed clergy. There are a lot of well-meaning but woefully unequipped Wiccan group leaders, with no formal training in theology, liturgy / ritual, counseling, group management, or any of the other skills that clergy people need to have to serve the Goddesses and Gods and the community.

Want to start practicing Wicca? Need to learn more about the God and Goddess? Looking to call on powerful deities when working magic? Then this is the book for you. Wicca Magical Deities: A Guide to the Wiccan God and Goddess, and Choosing a Deity to Work Magic With contains the answers to all these questions and more. Written by best-selling Wiccan author Lisa Chamberlain, Wicca Magical Deities draws on the author's experiences as an active practitioner, delivering information in a clear, concise, and easily digestible way. The God and the Goddess Perhaps the biggest difference between Wicca and other religions is the belief in a dualistic form of divinity. Rather than worshipping one god, Wiccans believe in a God and a Goddess, representing the male and female energies of the Universe that can be found in all of nature. Wiccans also believe that individuals can do more than simply pray to a supreme, all-powerful God and hope for the best. Instead, many Wiccans co-create with the forces of nature by linking their own personal energy with the divine through ritual and magic. Magic and the Deities Pioneers of Wicca and modern Witchcraft were piecing together what they envisioned as "the Old Religion." With little historical information available, these spiritual pioneers drew from the occult knowledge of prior centuries and ancient civilizations - this included the deities they worshipped. This has seen gods and goddesses like Osiris and Venus essentially reclaimed by Wiccans, as well as other deities from pantheons of lost ancient civilizations. Many Wiccans call upon these deities during magical rituals and they honor them at various points of the year. You will learn: The origins and views of the God and Goddess. The various forms of the Wiccan deities, including the Triple Goddess's three aspects. How to represent the God and Goddess on the Wiccan altar. The mythology, cosmology, and magical practices of several ancient civilizations. The most popular deities of the Egyptian, Roman, Greek, and Celtic pantheons. How to choose your deities. How to work magic with your chosen deities. In other words, Wicca Magical Deities will teach you everything you need to know about the God and Goddess and the Wiccan concept of divinity!
