Book Description
Covid-19 was a tsunami of sudden and major disruption on a global scale. Most people around the world experienced immediate and chaotic change. People stopped moving. The earth had a chance to breathe. Early on, people indicated that "there would be life before Covid-19 and life after Covid-19." Life would NEVER be the same. The swelling and welling up caused extreme and explosive forced action for most of humanity and a reaction from earth. There was no warning really. There's been nothing quite as earth-shocking and shattering for the entire world since World War II. Most humans from World War II are no longer here to share the memories of the abrupt and permanent alteration to lives everywhere. Covid-19 served as a reminder as to how precious all of life is. When this global pandemic wave rushed over earth, the impact was of unique proportions and magnitudes. Due to advanced technology and social media, the effects of Covid-19 and the havoc it wreaked on people's emotions, actions, and lives was readily available for the entire world to witness and respond to, or not. Due to the severe measures implemented in my state, the US, and worldwide, the immediate reaction was extreme fear. Close emotional allies of fear, regardless of spiritual and/or political affiliations, were the emotions of criticism, anger, judgment, division, frustration, suspicions, blame, and hopelessness. Basic freedoms that most people around the globe were typically afforded in normal times became forbidden, taboo, shunned. In most places, hand-shaking, hugging, kissing, and close contact were not allowed. In most places, for extended periods of time, restrictions halted physical contact with those outside of one's immediate family. If you were single or an elderly person in an assisted-care facility, there was a great chance of becoming very lonely. The coronavirus basically locked many people up in what would be a prison cell. While in this "prison cell," individuals were forced to reflect on themselves and on the relationships closest to them, mostly their immediate family, whether they were ready to do this or not. Close evaluation of workplace and extended social relationships took place as well. In the state of Ohio where I reside, towards the end of March 2020, the fear of the impending "coronavirus shutdown" was palpable with the extreme measures and restrictions that would affect personal and workplace lives. As an alternative healer and a very sensitive person, I felt the closing in, the locking of the prison cell door, the extreme fear most people felt. The close allies of fear surrounded me and attempted to draw me into the current of negativity. On March 20, 2020, God gave me a message strong and clear. He said, "Gwen, to make it through this pandemic, you must remain positive and hopeful for yourself, your family, community, humanity, and earth." On March 20, 2020, right before Ohio shut down life as usual, the poems started flowing. The first one was inspired by Proverbs 11:25 NIV, "A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed." The poems continued to flow through May 8, 2021, two Mother's Day poems to my mom. These poems are to help heal the wounds of Covid-19. They are a gift to humanity and earth. Certain proceeds from this book will aid poor children in rural Appalachia where I grew up in Southeastern Ohio and hopefully well beyond.

Book Description
In New Mexico, veterinarian Maya Maguire approaches the end of her training as one of CDC’s elite epidemic shock troops. Despite unfinished business with a toxic colleague, her work and personal life fall into place. Until COVID, and its impact on loved ones. After investigating the first human case in Arizona, her focus shifts to coronavirus in animals. As a Chinese American adoptee, her origin story comes full circle like an ouroboros—a dragon eating its tail. Interview with the Author Q: Have you always wanted to be a writer? A: A career in public health can include scientific writing and communication. But even before my training as a veterinarian, I wrote a satirical newspaper and a romance novel. In recent years, I’ve focused on creative writing as a way to entertain, educate, and enlighten. Q: Why do you write your MayaVerse series of microbial mysteries? A: Disease from animals—zoonoses—make up most emerging disease threats. As we’ve experienced in recent years, there’s been one scary disease after another. Bird flu, Ebola, Zika, SARS, COVID, and monkeypox. By focusing on a young veterinary epidemiologist named Maya Maguire, readers can enjoy her worldwide travels, scientific discoveries, and relationships as she matures over several decades of her lifetime. Each new disease is a puzzle to solve caused by a microscopic criminal. Q: What is One Health? A: One Health is an important MayaVerse theme. The concept integrates the health of people, other life forms, and the environment, to maximize the benefit for all. Q: What genre of books do you enjoy? A: I’m particularly drawn to upmarket stories with complex themes and happy for now (HFN) endings. I want passionate, engaging characters dealing with difficult life issues. Some of the MayaVerse mysteries are thrillers and many are romantic suspense. With a female medical detective, all are women’s fiction. Q: What authors do you read or admire? A: Having grown up in the Southwest, I worship Tony Hillerman and his daughter Anne Hillerman who’s carrying on his legacy. For medical thrillers, Tess Gerritsen is my goddess, although Robin Cook and Michael Crichton have great stories with more of a sci/fi leaning than the MayaVerse, which is strongly anchored in reality. I love the romantic suspense of Nora Roberts and the intense relationships of Nicholas Sparks. In the MayaVerse, setting is a strong character, and I’m inspired by the themes and writing of Edward Abbey and John Graves. Q: What are your favorite stories? A: The first book I devoured as a child was a volume of Shakespeare’s plays. I’m also a major fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda for “Hamilton” and “In the Heights.” Maya Maguire is addicted to storytelling through Broadway musicals, like me. Q: Which of your interests make an appearance in your books? A: Travel throughout the U.S. and worldwide. Animals of all kinds, including pets like cats and dogs, livestock like horses and cattle, and wildlife. Photography, art, music, and museums. Family and friendships. Hiking and old movies.

Book Description
Riding 2,000 miles on horseback from Montana to New Mexico sounds like a crazy but thrilling dream or pure hardship and exhaustion. According to Bernice Ende, the trip was all that and more. Since swinging her leg over the saddle for that first long ride in 2005 (at the age of 50), Ende has logged more than 29,000 miles in the saddle, crisscrossing North America on horseback - alone. More than once she has traversed the Great Plains, the Southwest deserts, the Cascade Range, and the Rocky Mountains. Along the way, she discovered a sense of community and love of place that unites people wherever they live. From 2014-2016, she was the first person to ride coast to coast and back again in one trek, winning acclaim from the international Long Riders' Guild and awe from the people she met along the way. Bernice Ende's memoirs are illuminated by accompanying maps of her routes and photos from her journeys, capturing the instant friends she meets along the way, and her ongoing encounters with harsh weather, wildlife, hard work, mosquitoes, tricky route-finding, and the occasional worn out horseshoe. Ende reveals her inner struggles and triumphs - testing the limits of physical and mental stamina, coping with inescapable solitude, and the rewards of living life her own way, as she says, "in her own skin." Saddle up and come along for the journey of a lifetime.

Book Description
Is dengue the next pandemic? Two veterinary medical detectives, decades apart in age and experience, battle the tropical disease first in New York City and New Mexico, then in Hawai‘i. Even in paradise, people can’t escape blood-thirsty mosquitoes spurred on by a warming climate. Join these resilient women as they push through personal challenges to discover the scientific truth and stop the relentless death toll. Faye Simpson abandons New York and a domineering boss to solve the mystery of an explosion in Hawaiian dengue infections. She postpones her blossoming relationship with a younger trans female physician and reconnects with a veterinary school classmate who’s a dengue expert. Maya Maguire, brokenhearted from family tragedies, is thrilled to push aside painful memories in the Land of Enchantment and contribute her disease detective skills. Despite their efforts, the disease swarms two Hawaiian islands through insatiable mosquito carriers. Lessons learned from initial investigations on the mainland don’t control the threat. Faye has seen nature’s deadly creativity before, and the evil people can do. Maya’s brilliant analytical work leaves both vets wondering whom they can trust, and what caused the fatal outbreak, people or nature. Can Faye and Maya decipher the mystery of a spiraling catastrophe in Hawai‘i and beyond? Interview with the Author Q: Fans of which other authors will love this novel? A: Michael Crichton for science-based thrillers, Tess Gerritsen for medical thrillers, Nora Roberts for romantic suspense, Nicholas Sparks for intense relationships, and Tony Hillerman for multicultural characters and vivid settings. Q: Which recent bestseller will remind me of “Dengue: A Microbial Mystery”? A: “Eruption” by Michael Crichton and James Patterson Q: Why is dengue the focus of the fourth MayaVerse microbial mystery? A: Dengue disease is the most common mosquito-borne viral disease in the world. Infections are skyrocketing as Aedes mosquitoes migrate into warmer non-tropical areas. Q: What is One Health? A: One Health is an important MayaVerse theme. The concept integrates the health of people, animals, insects, and the environment, to maximize the benefit for all. Q: Why are all the book covers nature photographs? A: Most of the exciting action is based outdoors, not in a hospital or pathology lab. The covers reinforce the crucial role of nature in maintenance of ecologic and disease life cycles. Q: Have you always wanted to be a writer? A: Scientific writing and communication are a focus of my career as a veterinary epidemiologist. But creative writing has been a lifelong passion to entertain, educate, and enlighten. Q: What’s the genre of the MayaVerse? A: Contemporary, upmarket stories with complex themes and happy-for-now (HFN) endings. Medical thrillers as characters battle disease outbreaks from animals and insects. Women’s fiction with elements of romantic suspense featuring passionate and engaging female medical detectives who transform themselves in the face of difficult life issues. Crime fiction with deadly germs as the criminal cause, sometimes aided by an inadvertent or deliberate human hand. Mysteries as the characters solve the puzzle of confusing illnesses and deaths.
