This investigation was a study focused on identifying factors present at a middle school with high levels of organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs). Organ in 1988 was the first used to describe behaviors or actions that are not prescribed but occurred freely to help others with the task at hand. This study utilized a mixed methods research design called a sequential explanatory design in order to determine the factors present in a single case school with high the levels of OCB. The OCB Level of all three middle schools in one district was measured using the OCB School Scale which was used in the selection of the case study school. The researcher administered the Individual OCB Scale at the case school in order to determine which teachers would be interviewed. Fourteen teachers and the principal were interviewed to determine factors that they identified as helping to promote OCB. The researcher discovered that teachers who exhibited above and beyond behaviors believed that this was normal school behavior. Teachers who exhibited OCB felt that (a) their teaching became better, (b) they made a difference in their students' lives, and (c) they were more enthusiastic and satisfied with their job. Teachers exhibited higher OCB because (a) they wanted their students to achieve more, (b) it contributed to their students' well being, and (c) it increased their students' love for the subject matter and learning. Teachers exhibited higher OCB to (a) make their school a better place, (b) improve the overall school climate, (c) create a more positive school environment and (d) increase student achievement. Subsequent research could focus on how Individual OCB is affected by teachers' unions, socio-economics, age, number of years teaching, marital status, and the number of children they might have.

This study examined the relationship between servant leadership of the principal with Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) and school climate. Servant leadership, a leadership behavior that emphasizes personal growth of followers, has a useful research history in business but limited exposure in public schools. Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) is an organizational construct that describes non-contractual behaviors of workers that contribute to the success of the organization. The climate of a school is defined as the working environment as perceived by the teachers within the school. The people-centered behaviors of a servant leader principal promote positive social reciprocal interactions between the members within the organization. These relationships in turn foster organizational citizenship behaviors within the school and provide an open/healthy school environment. This study utilized data gathered from 708 participants within a random sample of forty-one public high schools in Alabama. Three reliable instruments were used in this study: Servant Leadership Survey (SLS), Organizational Climate Index (OCI), Organizational Citizenship Behavior Scale (OCB Scale). The first hypothesis of the study tested the relationship of SL with OCB and School Climate. The findings for this study supported a previous study that servant leadership behaviors of the principal are significantly related to the school climate. As servant leadership behaviors increase the climate of the school improves. Findings also reveal that servant leadership behaviors are significantly related to the OCB within the school. As servant leadership behaviors increase the level of OCB within the school rises. The second hypothesis of the study tested the predictability of servant leadership and OCB on the perceived school climate. Regression analysis results identified OCB as the greater predictor of school climate. Further examination of the servant leadership and OCB with each climate dimension provided a more comprehensive examination of the relationships. OCB was found to be a greater predictor of collegial leadership and professional teacher behavior. Surprisingly, results of the analysis revealed socioeconomic status (SES) was the greater predictor of the academic press and environmental press within the school climate.

The moral obligation and public expectation to provide students with a high quality education creates significant pressure for principals to continuously improve the educational program despite obstacles such as an ever-changing economy and parameters placed on workload due to job descriptions and union contracts. The reality of teaching is that educators cannot be bound by the limitations of these documents. Consequently, it would benefit a principal to nurture a school culture that embraces a mentality of going above and beyond. Formally known as Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB), this construct explains discretionary behavior that may or may not be formally recognized by a supervisor and which ultimately leads to the more effective functioning of an organization. This research study examined the role of the principal in motivating or inspiring OCB among teachers. Using a phenomenological approach and its subset, the Critical Incident Technique, the specific actions and behaviors of one principal at a high performing urban school with high levels of OCB were collected using semi-structured interviews. The data revealed eight critical incidents leading to teachers' desire to engage in citizenship behaviors: showing interest and concern for personal life of staff, giving encouragement, consistently being visible and accessible to staff, providing resources, inviting staff to her home, giving recognition and appreciation, having a vision, and thinking like a teacher. Further analysis of these eight critical incidents elucidated that the principal's interpersonal skills were at the core of her ability to inspire OCB.

The main aim of this study is to determine in what level the teachers at secondary schools display organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) according to the perceptions of the school administrators. The data of this study, which is descriptive, were collected via the "the scale of OCB" which was developed by Podsakoff, MacKenzie, Moorman and Fetter (1990) and Moorman (1991). 2 provinces selected from each of seven geographical regions of Turkey and 219 administrators-164 vice principals, 55 principals- selected randomly from four secondary schools of these provinces participated in the study. The results of this study reveal that the teachers at secondary schools highly displayed OCB. According to the school administrators; the teachers mostly display courtesy and then altruism, civil virtue, conscientiousness and sportsmanship behavior in the given order. (Contains 1 table.).

Research suggests that teachers who exhibit organizational citizenship behaviors positively affect student achievement. Additionally, leaders can influence school climate by establishing perceptions of justice and a school structure that is enabling. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between organizational citizenship behaviors, organizational justice, and enabling structures in schools. Data were collected at the school level using reliable and valid surveys that individually measure citizenship behavior, perceptions of justice, and the extent that school structure is enabling. The Organizational Citizenship Behavior Scale (OCB), Organizational Justice Scale (OJS), and the Enabling School Structure Form (ESS) were utilized to survey licensed teachers for their responses. Data were analyzed from 781 teachers in 58 public elementary schools and 50 public secondary schools in Alabama. Correlational analyses were conducted to determine the relationships among the variables. Findings indicated that organizational citizenship did not have a significant relationship with organizational justice or enabling school structures. However, a significant positive correlation was found between organizational justice and enabling school structures. Additionally, a regression analysis indicated neither organizational justice nor an enabling school structure predicted organizational citizenship behaviors among teachers. SES was not correlated with, or a predictor of, any other variable. This study, by examining the relationships among these variables, provided new insight into the theoretical knowledge of organizational dynamics, and practically as a guide to school administrators.

Organizational Citizenship Behaviors (OCB) of employees' is becoming increasingly important due to their latent influence on overall organizational performance. Current study attempted to examine the OCB among teachers of the University of the Punjab, Lahore for its antecedents and consequences. Four factors entailing personality characteristics, organizational justice, perceived supervisory support and OCB received from coworkers were studied for their potential association with teachers' practice of OCB. Moreover organizational performance in general was considered in the model as a consequence of teachers OCB practice. Data collection was facilitated by employing a survey method. Data was subsequently analyzed with the help of advanced nonparametric measures such as Kendall's tau-b and Gamma test. The results of analysis suggested a strong positive correlation between the four factors considered as antecedents and teachers OCB which are found consistent with the past researches done in the field. Moreover, teachers OCB has been found to be positively related with overall departmental /organizational performance which is also in affirmation with the past research findings.
