Book Description
The Butcher Shop Girl begins with Carmen's unique coming-of-age as she's ripped from her extended family after her Catholic parents' divorce. Learning to conquer unusual places in the name of survival, Carmen spends her childhood working in her mother's slaughterhouse in prairie Alberta, tearing through flesh and getting up to trouble. To escape a violent home, she bounces from house to house, working on the family farm, and eventually in the oil patch. At eighteen, Carmen's competitive craving for money and independence leads her to a career as an exotic dancer. Starting out in seedy small-town dives, she quickly earns her place in high-end clubs throughout North America, becoming an elite world-travelling entertainer. Carmen lives the high life and makes big money. She parties with the Hells Angels and falls in love with a sexy U.S. drug enforcement agent-effortlessly walking the line of two extreme worlds. But when run-ins with premium organized crime land her in Bolivia, she realizes she's gone too far, and the only thing that can free her is to ask her estranged family for help. The Butcher Shop Girl is a compelling memoir of resilience and persistence that captures the vivacious spirit of a small-town girl determined to succeed by any means necessary....

Book Description
Toward Active Living is the first book to bridge the gap between high-level research in the physical activity sciences and its application to programs and practice. The book combines the perspectives of expert scientists, educators, practitioners, and policy makers into one of the most extensive and thorough references available for the promotion of physical activity, fitness, and health. Written in nontechnical language, Toward Active Living includes 41 of the papers presented during the Active Living portion of the 1992 International Conference on Physical Activity, Fitness, and Health held in Toronto. The book enables practitioners to apply research-based knowledge in the physical activity sciences in their day-to-day work. Toward Active Living is an essential reference that fitness instructors, health/fitness administrators, physical educators, students, and policy makers will turn to again and again.

Book Description
This is another book about hockey. But this one is unique. It contains many stories by and about individuals who broadcast play-by-plays of major junior and provincial junior A games from arenas across Canada. There are even a few chapters about broadcasters from teams in the United States that play in Canadian leagues. There are major junior chapters from the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Chapters from provincial junior A leagues include British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and the Maritimes. Some of the contributors for this book wrote their own chapters. Others preferred to be interviewed. In all cases, the final version of each chapter was approved by the contributor. The chapters include many descriptions of broadcasters experiences. They describe their early experiences with hockey. Some played, while others listened on the radio, watched on TV, or attended games. The stories include how they became involved as play-by-play broadcasters and who were direct or indirect mentors. Each broadcaster recounts their memories of the first game they called. They also describe some of the notable players, coaches, and color commentators. Where possible, there are even some bus stories. Each chapter concludes with a comment about what the experience of broadcasting play-by-play has meant to each individual.

Book Description
Roadtripping documents a decade of road trips through the fiefdom of Alberta. The men and women who make up the Buffalo Gals first set out in July 1999 to experience the unusual and charming roadside attractions of south-central Alberta. Never dreaming that this one-off adventure would turn into an annual event, it’s ten years later and they continue their escapades. Each year a new destination is chosen and the weekend-long travel begins. Traditions have evolved including elaborate scrapbooking, eating in gourmet dining rooms (when available) and excessive snacking (without fail). Beyond the joys and challenges of being on the road and a deepening bond of friendship, this book is a love poem to Alberta, a province often misunderstood and mislabelled as being the right-wing cowboy haunt of Canada. With trip route maps, hilarious photos, and appendices including checklists and recipes, Roadtripping explores the bizarre and wonderful attractions of wild rose country, stuffed gophers, political fanaticism, mad cows and more.

Book Description
Patty Stratten, a wealthy, very religious, highly educated, Boston spinster, decides to give up her comfortable life for the rigors of teaching at an orphanage and school in an isolated area of Eastern Kentucky, a place that is completely devoid of modern conveniences. She falls in love with an uneducated, uncultured, mountaineer, that is a firm believer in the commandment, ‘Thou shalt do no murder,’ and is eleven years her junior. When World War I is declared, he feels that he should help his country and volunteers for service but refuses to accept a rifle. He is assigned as an aide to the medics that are caring for the wounded. While crawling toward an enemy foxhole to rescue a fellow soldier, he is seriously wounded and is discharged as being physically unable to continue service. He returns home, marries Patty, but is shunned by his former friends and neighbors for his refusal to participate in the killing.
