Book Description
From the Solway Firth in the south to Shetland in the north, from remote St Kilda to the west to St Abbs in the east, Tom Weir explores Scotland as a walker and climber, and along the way introduces his readers to the range of wildlife and people living in the countryside, and historical aspects of various places. To his vivid descriptive writing he adds memories of some absent friends, and also retraces the path of Bonnie Prince Charlie on the run after Culloden. Tom Weir became a household name in Scotland as a result of the television series in which he explored his native country, but the book 'Weir's Way' is, to quote the author, 'not about every "e;Weir's Way"e; programme ... it is a broader vision of Scotland using the medium of written words'.

Book Description
Side weirs are widely used to divert or discharge flows from reservoirs, rivers, artificial channels and sewers. The hydraulic behaviour of this type of weir is complex and difficult to predict accurately using simple methods and the diversity of applictions of side weirs has the potential to complicate guidance. This manual covers the fundamental hydraulic principles and discusses the practical design issues separately for each main strcuture type.

Book Description
In 1871 two brothers, George and James Weir, founded the engineering firm of G. & J. Weir, one of a booming range of industry on the west coast of Scotland. At their Cathcart works in Glasgow the Weirs produced their own groundbreaking inventions, all crucial to the development of steam ships at that time. Today, 130 turbulent years later, the Weir Group is almost the last of those once-flourishing companies still to retain its independence and its Scottish base. Over the intervening century, Weirs manufactured pumps and valves for ships' engines around the world, oil pipelines and desalination plants, armaments (in the two world wars), and heavy equipment for power stations. Along the way it was briefly involved in autogiros (the precursor of the helicopter). Rooted in the inventiveness and determination of the Victorian manufacturing age, Weirs adapted to the changing world of the twentieth century, determined always to diversify, win overseas contracts, build partnerships and above all survive. This fascinating story is told by William Weir, a past chairman and chief executive of the company. Combining reminiscence and colourful anecdote with cool analysis of the company's triumphs and failures, this is an unusual company history and an invaluable record of a Scottish engineering legend.

Book Description
Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

Book Description
Labyrinth spillways are almost as old as dam engineering. In spite of the fact that they appear as a very good technical-economical compromise, only 0.1% of large dams are equipped with such weirs. The main reason for this is that traditional labyrinth weirs usually cannot be installed on top of concrete gravity dams as they require a large foundat

Book Description
Since the first implementation by Electricité de France on the Goulours dam (France) in 2006, the Piano Key Weir has become a more and more applied solution to increase the discharge capacity of existing spillways. In parallel, several new large dam projects have been built with such a flood control structure, usually in combination with gates. Today, more than 25 Piano Key Weirs are in operation or under construction all over the world. More than 15 years of research and development have enabled detailed investigations of the hydraulic and structural behaviour of the Piano Key Weir complex structure and have provided more and more accurate design equations. Following the proceedings of the first two workshops held in Liege (Belgium – 2011) and Paris (France – 2013), Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs III collects the contributions presented by people with varied background, from researchers to practitioners, at the 3rd International Workshop on Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs - PKW 2017 (22-24 February 2017, Qui Nhon, Vietnam). The papers, reviewed and accepted by an International Scientific Committee, summarize the current state-of-the-art on Piano Key Weirs from a theoretical to a practical point of view, and present most of the main projects in operation or under construction. Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs III is thus a reference for students, practitioners and researchers interested in Dams Engineering.
