Book Description
Excerpt from Weeds of Farm Land Everyone who cultivates the soil, whether on the farm or garden, is perforce interested in weeds, for their absence or presence amongst the crops has much to do in determining the relative success or failure of the undertaking. A very great deal has been written on the subject, but the information is widely scattered throughout the literature of agriculture and botany. In this country, at least, very few efforts have hitherto been made to gather up and correlate this varied knowledge, thus rendering it accessible to those most interested. Furthermore, it is only of recent years that definite attempts have been made to work out the quantitative and qualitative relations between weeds, the soils on which they grow and the crops with which they are associated. In this respect the conclusions so far drawn can only be regarded as tentative, subject to modification and revision as more data become available. It has seemed justifiable, therefore, to attempt to set forth the present position of affairs, in order that future attacks on the weed problem may be more co-ordinated, and that valuable time and labour may be utilised to the best advantage. The original investigations embodied in the following pages owe much to the cordial assistance afforded by the many landowners and farmers whose land has been utilised for the purpose. Book Description
Excerpt from Farm Weeds of Canada In the Seed Laboratory all kinds of seeds are tested free of charge to farmers. The reports issued thereon give the names of weed seeds found in the samples sent for test, but the mere names of weeds frequently have no meaning to persons who are not expert in the nomenclature of plants. In consequence most new weeds become introduced and well established before their noxious character is appreciated by farmers. Book Description
Excerpt from Weeds of the Farm and Garden There has long been needed a book describing the more important weeds of the United States, although there are numerous publications of the United States government and state experiment stations that treat of the more im portant weeds of the United States and Canada and their eradication. The demand for publications of this kind is so great that the editions soon become exhausted. This work on weeds is here presented to bring some of the more important phases of the subject together in one treatise. Comparatively few books on this subject have been published in America. The treatise by Fletcher and Clark, and a second edition revised by Clark, treat the subject admirably. The work of Darlington and Thurber, American Weeds and Useful Plants, found a welcome place in the botanists' library. The little book by Prof. Thomas Shaw also filled a most useful place in the agricultural literature of this country. Book Description
Excerpt from Weeds: Simple Lessons for Children HE question of weeds, and how they can be kept in check, is one of the most important which has to be faced by the farmer or gardener. Agriculture is an eternal war against weeds, and by neglect of cleaning his land, the careless cultivator may lose one-fourth or in extreme cases even one-half of the yield which might be his. The preaching of the crusade against weeds cannot be begun too early. In order to fight weeds, we must know how they grow and how they spread; to these points particular attention is given in the follow ing chapters. Apart from their importance as agricultural pests, weeds are, as such, a fascinating study. The 'history of weeds is the history of agriculture. Ever since the peoples of the Stone Age first began to till the ground, weeds and crops have gone hand in hand; and man's migratory movements, his wars, and later on his trade, have all played their part in assisting the spread of his enemies the weeds.
