Excerpt from Investigations in Soil Management: Being Three of Six Papers on the Influence of Soil Management Upon the Water-Soluble Salts in Soils and the Yield of Crops The three papers here presented form but portions of a single investigation systematically planned to throw new light upon important problems in soil management, and the full significance of them, as parts of a whole, can only be seem by considering them in connection with the three papers from which they have been severed in that they were not allowed to appear as Departmental publications. It is believed that the subjects of the six papers, and the data presented in them, merit adequate discussion but this was withheld to avoid, as far as possible, antagonizing the published views of the Bureau and the three papers are presented here as they were originally submitted. In addition to these statements it is due the writer and his associates in this investigation to say that the data presented have lost very much of fullness and value through changes in plan made in the midst of the investigation but over which we had no control. Excerpt from The Water-Relation Between Plant and Soil The work of Dixon and his colleagues, and that of Renner, of Overton, and others have at length placed upon what appears to be a rational physical basis the long-vexed question of the dynamics of the ascent of water in plants, and recent studies of the relation of the evaporating power of the air and that of sunshine to plant transpiration have made it possible at least to begin to consider the problems of the aerial water relation of plants as involving measurable forces or powers. Our knowledge of the subterranean water-relation of plants remains, however, in an exceedingly primitive condition, although the a priori analysis of the problem here involved may be carried forward beyond the ability of present methods to furnish experimental data. Livingston has insisted that the power of the soil to deliver water to root surfaces is the prime external condition determining the moisture supply to plants in non-saline and non-toxic soils, and the same writer has emphasized the need of some adequate method for determining this water-supplying power of the soil.
