Book Description
On February 20, 1978, the Department of Econometrics of the University of Tilburg organized a symposium on Convex Analysis and Mathematical th Economics to commemorate the 50 anniversary of the University. The general theme of the anniversary celebration was "innovation" and since an important part of the departments' theoretical work is con centrated on mathematical economics, the above mentioned theme was chosen. The scientific part of the Symposium consisted of four lectures, three of them are included in an adapted form in this volume, the fourth lec ture was a mathematical one with the title "On the development of the application of convexity". The three papers included concern recent developments in the relations between convex analysis and mathematical economics. Dr. P.H.M. Ruys and Dr. H.N. Weddepohl (University of Tilburg) study in their paper "Economic theory and duality", the relations between optimality and equilibrium concepts in economic theory and various duality concepts in convex analysis. The models are introduced with an individual facing a decision in an optimization problem. Next, an n person decision problem is analyzed, and the following concepts are defined: optimum, relative optimum, Nash-equilibrium, and Pareto-optimum.

Book Description
This volume invites young scientists and doctoral students in the fields of capital market theory, informational economics, and mana gement science to visualize the many different ways to arrive at a thorough understanding of risk and capital. Rather than focusing on one subject only, the sample of papers collected may be viewed as a representative choice of various aspects. Some contributions have more the character of surveys on the state of the art while others stress original research. We fou~d it proper to group the papers under two main themes. Part I covers information, risk aversion, and capital market theory. Part II is devoted to management, policy, and empirical evidence. Two contributions, we think, deserved to break this allocation and to be placed in a prologue. The ideas expressed by Jost B. Walther, although meant as opening address, draw interesting parallels for risk and capital in genetics and evolution. An old, fundamental pro blem was asked and solved by Martin J. Beckmann: how does risk affect saving? The wise answer (Martin's 60th birthday is in July 1984) is both smart and simple, although the proof requires sophisticated dynamic programming. As always, such a work must be the result of a special occasion.

Book Description
The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Laxenburg, Austria, has been involved in research on nondifferentiable optimization since 1976. IIASA-based East-West cooperation in this field has been very productive, leading to many important theoretical, algorithmic and applied results. Nondifferentiable optimi zation has now become a recognized and rapidly developing branch of mathematical programming. To continue this tradition, and to review recent developments in this field, IIASA held a Workshop on Nondifferentiable Optimization in Sopron (Hungary) in September 1964. The aims of the Workshop were: 1. To discuss the state-of-the-art of nondifferentiable optimization (NDO), its origins and motivation; 2. To compare-various algorithms; 3. To evaluate existing mathematical approaches, their applications and potential; 4. To extend and deepen industrial and other applications of NDO. The following topics were considered in separate sessions: General motivation for research in NDO: nondifferentiability in applied problems, nondifferentiable mathematical models. Numerical methods for solving nondifferentiable optimization problems, numerical experiments, comparisons and software. Nondifferentiable analysis: various generalizations of the concept of subdifferen tials. Industrial and other applications. This volume contains selected papers presented at the Workshop. It is divided into four sections, based on the above topics: I. Concepts in Nonsmooth Analysis II. Multicriteria Optimization and Control Theory III. Algorithms and Optimization Methods IV. Stochastic Programming and Applications We would like to thank the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, particularly Prof. V. Kaftanov and Prof. A.B. Kurzhanski, for their support in organiz ing this meeting.

Book Description
During the week of September 20-23, 1983, an International Workshop on Interactive Decision Analysis and Interpretative Computer Intelligence was held at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Laxenburg, Austria. More than fifty scientists representing seventeen coun tries participated. The aim of the Workshop was to review existing approaches to problems involving multiple conflicting objectives, to look at methods and techniques for interactive decision analysis, and to demonstrate theuse of existing interactive decision-support systems. The Workshop was motivated, firstly, by the realization that the rapid development of computers, especially microcomputers, will greatly increase the scope and capabilities of computerized decision-support systems. It is important to explore the potential of these systems for use in handling the complex technological, environmental, economic and social problems thatface the world today. Research in decision-support systems also has another, less tangible but possibly more important, motivation. The development of efficient sys tems for decision support requires a thorough understanding of the dif ferences between the decision-making processes in different nations and cultures. An understanding of the different rationales underlying decision making is not only necessary for the development of efficient decision support systems, but is also an important factor in encouraging inter national understanding and cooperation.

Book Description
This book is intended as a contribution to the theory of markets with imperfect information. The subject being nearly limitless, only certain selected topics are discussed. These are outlined in the Introduction (Ch. 0). The remainder of the book is divided into three parts. All results of economic significance are contained in Parts II & III. Part I introduces the main tools for the analysis, in particular the concept of an information structure. Although most of the material presented in Part I is not original, it is hoped that the detailed and self-contained exposition will help the reader to understand not only the following pages, but also the existing technical and variegated literature on markets with imperfect information. The mathematical prerequisites needed, but not explained in the text rarely go beyond elementary calculus and probability theory. Whenever more advanced concepts are used, I have made an effort to give an intuitive explanation as well, so that the argument can also be followed on a non-technical level (cf. e.g. the treatment of the "generic" viewpoint in Ch. 9). In the same spirit, discussion of mathematical assumptions is limited to those which have economic sig- ficance, whereas purely "technical" assumptions (like differentiability or integrability of certain functions) are usually made without comment whenever convenient. The logical interdependence of chapters is as follows: Ch. 3 . Ch. 1 /~I--=---- Ch. 4 Ch. 2 Ch. 8 ~I -=--- /"'-.... Ch.
