Book Description
To mark the new millennium, Virtual History and the Bible asks where we are at the fin de siècle and how we got that way. What if important events in ancient history had turned out differently? How different might the present century be? What if Merneptah’s scribes were telling the truth when they claimed, "Israel has been laid waste?" What if the exodus and conquest had really happened? What if we had no Assyrian account of Sennacherib’s third campaign or the palace reliefs depicting his capture of Lachish? What if the Chronicler did use the Deuteronomistic History? What if Luke had never met Theophilus? What if Paul had travelled east rather than west? This is not fantasy or fiction. The sixteen essays in this volume, by eminent historians of the Bible, engage in serious scholarly inquiry into alternative historical scenarios and their potential consequences. The result is a trenchant demonstration of the ways historians set about working with the evidence in order to reconstruct the past. Contributors Keith W. Whitelam, Lester L. Grabbe, Susan Ackerman, Thomas L. Thompson, Ernst Axel Knauf, Ehud Ben Zvi, Diana Edelman, Robert P. Carroll, Niels Peter Lemche, Joseph Blenkinsopp, A. Graeme Auld, Philip R. Davies, Loveday C. A. Alexander, Richard Bauckham, John Dominic Crossan, Pheme Perkins.

Book Description
We live in a wired world where 24/7 digital connectivity is increasingly the norm. Christian megachurch communities often embrace this reality wholeheartedly while more traditional churches often seem hesitant and overwhelmed by the need for an interactive website, a Facebook page and a twitter feed. This book accepts digital connectivity as our reality, but presents a vision of how faith communities can utilize technology to better be the body of Christ to those who are hurting while also helping followers of Christ think critically about the limits of our digital attachments. This book begins with a conversion story of a non-cell phone owning, non-Facebook using religion professor judgmental of the ability of digital tools to enhance relationships. A stage IV cancer diagnosis later, in the midst of being held up by virtual communities of support, a conversion occurs: this religion professor benefits in embodied ways from virtual sources and wants to convert others to the reality that the body of Christ can and does exist virtually and makes embodied difference in the lives of those who are hurting. The book neither uncritically embraces nor rejects the constant digital connectivity present in our lives. Rather it calls on the church to a) recognize ways in which digital social networks already enact the virtual body of Christ; b) tap into and expand how Christ is being experienced virtually; c) embrace thoughtfully the material effects of our new augmented reality, and c) influence utilization of technology that minimizes distraction and maximizes attentiveness toward God and the world God loves.

Book Description
We live in an age when younger African-American Christians are asking tough questions that previous generations would dare not ask. This generation doesn't hesitate to question the validity of the Scriptures, the efficacy of the church, and even the historicity of Jesus. Young people are becoming increasingly curious about what role, if any, did people of African descent play in biblical history? Or, if the Bible is devoid of Black presence, and is merely a book by Europeans, about Europeans and for Europeans to the exclusion of other races and ethnicities? Dr. Theron D. Williams makes a significant contribution to this conversation by answering the difficult questions this generation fearlessly poses. Dr. Williams uses facts from the Bible, well-respected historians, scientists, and DNA evidence to prove that Black people comprised the biblical Israelite community. He also shares historical images from the ancient catacombs that vividly depict the true likeness of the biblical Israelites. This book does not change the biblical text, but it will change how you understand it.This Second Edition provides updated information and further elucidation of key concepts. Also, at the encouragement of readership, this edition expands some of the ideas and addresses concerns my readership felt pertinent to this topic.

Written in Greek in the fourth century, it is the oldest surviving complete New Testament, and one of the two oldest manuscripts of the whole Bible. No other early manuscript of the Christian Bible has been so extensively corrected, and the significance of Codex Sinaiticus for the reconstruction of the Christian Bible's original text, the history of the Bible and the history of western book making is immense. Since 2002, a major international project has been creating an electronic version of the manuscript. This magnificent printed facsimile reunites the text, now divided between the British Library, the National Library of Russia, St Catherine's Monastery, Mt Sinai and Leipzig University Library.
