Book Description
Introducing a New U.S. History Text That Takes Religion Seriously Unto a Good Land offers a distinctive narrative history of the American people -- from the first contacts between Europeans and North America's native inhabitants, through the creation of a modern nation, to the 2004 presidential election. Written by a team of highly regarded historians, this textbook shows how grasping the uniqueness of the "American experiment" depends on understanding not only social, cultural, political, and economic factors but also the role that religion has played in shaping U. S. history. While most United States history textbooks in recent decades have expanded their coverage of social and cultural history, they still tend to shortchange the role of religious ideas, practices, and movements in the American past. Unto a Good Land restores the balance by giving religion its appropriate place in the story. This readable and teachable text also features a full complement of maps, historical illustrations, and "In Their Own Words" sidebars with excerpts from primary source documents.

Book Description
J. Matthew Ward’s Garden of Ruins serves as an insightful social and military history of Civil War–era Louisiana. Partially occupied by Union forces starting in the spring of 1862, the Confederate state experienced the initial attempts of the U.S. Army to create a comprehensive occupation structure through military actions, social regulations, the destabilization of slavery, and the formation of a complex bureaucracy. Skirmishes between Union soldiers and white civilians supportive of the Confederate cause multiplied throughout this period, eventually turning occupation into a war on local households and culture. In unoccupied regions of the state, Confederate forces and their noncombatant allies likewise sought to patrol allegiance, leading to widespread conflict with those they deemed disloyal. Ward suggests that social stability during wartime, and ultimately victory itself, emerged from the capacity of military officials to secure their territory, governing powers, and nonmilitary populations. Garden of Ruins reveals the Civil War, state-building efforts, and democracy itself as contingent processes through which Louisianans shaped the world around them. It also illustrates how military forces and civilians discovered unique ways to wield and hold power during and immediately after the conflict.

A nightmare villain stalks the heroes of New Bedlam. The vigilante heroes of New Bedlam face their more dire challenge yet. When a–Burke! What are you do– Hey there, Burke Hale taking over again. Let me tell you, dropping a flaming dude through my roof was not subtle. I mean, yeah, it got my attention. Not to mention burning down the former motel-converted-to-crummy-apartments place where I lived. Not cool. Sure, lots of people think I should be dead. A few have made semi-serious attempts to make that happen. But this guy… He’s got issues. And the more the vigilante heroes and I figure out about this master villain, the more issues he has. The biggest issue being, he seems more than capable of destroying not just me, but the entire city. But first, he wants me to suffer. He wants all of us to suffer. He’s making the city tear itself apart. Somehow he’s made everyone lose their minds. People have gone crazy, turning on each other like animals. The vigilante family are counting on me to solve the mystery of this villain’s grudge against me. The trouble is, I have no idea who this dude is. It’s not like I keep a master list of people I’ve ticked off. I mean, that would be a big list. Like famous horror writer novel pages of thickness big. The vigilante heroes and I (and my super awesome ninja ferret, Binky) have to figure out who this guy is. But if we can’t, we might have to give him what he wants. My head on a platter. Sure would be nice to avoid that. Can we save the city and my precious neck, too? The next action-packed, twisting and turning adventure in the Bedlam’s Heroes series.

Book Description
A Vigilant Society presents a provocative hypothesis that argues that Western society as we know it emerged from the soil of Jewish intellectual advances in the thirteenth century, especially those formulated on the Iberian Peninsula. A paradigmatic shift began to occur, one that abandoned the pre–Gothic Sephardic wisdom found in, for example, the writings of Maimonides in favor of what author Javier Roiz calls the "vigilant society." This model embraces a conception of politics that includes a radical privatization of an individual's interior life and—especially as adopted and adapted in later centuries by Roman Catholic and Calvinist thinkers—is marked by a style of politics that accepts the dominance of power and control as given. Vigilant society laid the foundation for the Western understanding of politics and its institutions and remains pervasive in today's world.

Book Description
In Vigilant Faith: Passionate Agnosticism in a Secular World, Daniel Boscaljon takes up the contemporary challenges to faith by skepticism and secularism. He proposes a model of faith for believers and unbelievers alike—a passionate agnosticism—that is rooted in a skeptical consciousness. Skepticism and faith are structurally similar, he writes, in that they share an "unknowing" quality. The author argues that vigilance—the act of keeping watch, a spiritual practice in its own right—is as necessary a precondition for the structure of faith as it is for the structure of skepticism. A suspension in uncertainty and an openness to possibility require vigilance, he attests, if faith and skepticism are to avoid the often dogmatic tendencies of both theism and atheism to cling to their own brands of certainty and knowledge. Boscaljon has three aims: to expand the current, post-theistic definitions of God for greater relevance to human beings on an individual and existential level; to integrate skepticism into faith so that it will restore the importance of faith to current theology and recover it from anti-intellectual bias; and to conceptualize the vigilance of faith in such a way that can provide a vocabulary for distinguishing "good faith" from "bad faith." He offers a variety of cultural examples ranging from film to poetry to represent a life of faith and to show how its components come together in practice. As an alternative to the prevailing fundamentalisms in today's world, his book proposes a paradigmatic understanding of faith in which theism, atheism, and agnosticism refuse to differ.

Book Description
Super hero friends are great. Except for the super villains trying to kill you. Twenty-five years after the Vigilante returned to New Bedlam, their daughter has taken up the hero’s mantle. Protecting the city from…wait, what are you– Hi, Burke Hale here, interrupting whatever this is to tell you what this story is really about. It’s about me and my super ninja hero ferret, Binky. You see, I came home to my converted motel room apartment in the seediest part of town and found myself dead on the couch. Or some wickedly handsome dude who looked exactly like me. Because I wasn’t dead. Though lots of people would be thrilled if I were dead. The cops were already there, examining my–the other dude’s–non-living body, and they were surprised to see me. Like, creepy ghost time surprised. Then these other guys showed up from some super secret government organization. They whipped their guns out and… That’s when Binky the awesome ninja ferret kicked their posteriors. Shortly after that things got weird. Which is saying a lot for me. I’m up to my eyeballs in trouble. So is Nora, my Vigilante hero girlfriend. Ex-girlfriend, technically, but I was working on changing that. Except the bad guy keeps blowing things up and everything keeps twisting around on me. I don’t know what’s what anymore. Then things get even more weird. If I can’t figure it out in time, everyone and everything I love is going to be as dead as that handsome guy on my couch. Which would be really bad. Vigilance’s Apprentice, the next strange and thrilling chapter in the Bedlam’s Heroes series.
