Samuel Gravely was the first African American to be commissioned a flag officer in the U.S. Navy, the first to command a Navy ship in the twentieth century, and the first to command a U.S. numbered fleet. In this memoir, co-authored by the noted naval historian Paul Stillwell, Gravely describes his life from his boyhood in Richmond, Virginia, through his officer service on board a World War II submarine chaser, to later tours of duty at sea and ashore. Denied housing and even jailed for impersonating an officer, he recounts efforts to overcome both cultural and institutional obstacles posed by racism as he rose through the ranks. In 2009, the Navy named the guided missile destroyer Gravely in his honor.' (Naval Institute Press website)

Book Description
This book examines the life of VADM Samuel L. Gravely, Jr., the first African American admiral in the United States Navy, with the twofold purpose of discovering the emerging leadership themes that distinguished him as an effective leader, from the 1940s to 1980, and to present a taxonomy of those inherent themes to be considered in the construction of one's own personal leadership philosophy. Using McCracken's long interview research method and Owen's thematic analysis process, this study analyzes an interview conducted with VADM Gravely December 1997. McCracken's long interview provides a method of comprehensive data collection that allows the researcher entrance into the world of VADM Gravely to experience his world, as he perceives it. Owen's thematic analysis completes the analysis process by providing a systematic approach to categorizing and making sense of the data that is collected from the interview. The synthesis of these methods of analysis, allow the researcher to uncover themes that are crucial to VADM Gravels' unstated leadership philosophy. Ten leadership themes emerged from a thematic analysis of the interview: impression management, caretaker, pursuit of excellence, self-confidence, communication, team building, followership, morality, discipline and preparedness. After identifying these inherent leadership themes, taxonomy was constructed to provide further clarification of each theme and to provide a starting point for consideration by an individual building their own personal leadership philosophy. This study has broader implications that are inherent in the process used by the researcher to uncover VADM Gravels' leadership philosophy. During the interview VADM Gravely was unable to provide the researcher a succinct leadership philosophy. As a result, an intense unraveling process began utilizing Owen's thematic analysis in order to discover emerging themes inherent in VADM Gravels' unstated leadership philosophy. The unraveling process utilized in this study can serve as a valuable source for further research in the area of leadership and as an equally valuable resource for the exploration, discovery and development of a personal leadership philosophy.

Admirals of the World
Author: William Stewart
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 0786482885
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 343
Book Description
This work provides biographies of more than 500 men and women who have served as admiral, vice admiral, or rear admiral. While officers from the U.S., British, French and Japanese navies make up the bulk of the work, officers from 22 countries, including Australia, Canada, Germany, India, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, and Spain, are also included. The main criterion for inclusion is that each person must have actively served in the rank of at least rear admiral, but not necessarily in enemy action. This effectively rules out people who were granted the rank on retirement, as a courtesy title or posthumously. The book also includes lists of admirals organized by nationality and by year of birth.

Great Black War Fighters
Author: Ben L. Walton
Publisher: Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency
ISBN: 1946539457
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 280
Book Description
This is a reissue of Great Black War Fighters: Profiles in Service that was first published in May 2012. Inspiration to make the volume available again came from the many outstanding reviews found on websites in 2017 about the publication. Below, for information, is the narrative that appeared on the back cover of the first edition of the book. Great Black War Fighters: Profiles in Service sets a precedent. No other book has ever been written to meet three documented and validated needs. One, to inform readers of the phenomenal achievements and remarkable contributions made to the defense and national security of the United States by African-American admirals and generals since President Harry S. Truman signed Executive Order 9981 on July 26, 1948, abolishing segregation in the nation’s armed forces. Two, to captivate, enlighten, and inspire students in training programs such as ROTC, the service academies, and OCS, who upon graduation, will be commissioned as officers in the military. Furthermore, it creates a resource for personnel on active duty or serving in the reserves to read how a group of black officers reached the pinnacle of their career, and doing it against enormous odds. Three, to produce a collectible, gift or keepsake for former service members, their loved ones and friends, so they can all take pride and be moved by the life stories in this book. Great Black War Fighters chronicles 29 black flag officers from among the 250 researched for the work.
