"This book is the first modern scholarly monograph on the emperor Jovian (363-364). It offers a new assessment of his reign and argues that Jovian's reign was of more importance than assumed by most (ancient and modern) historians. This study argues that Jovian restored the Roman empire after the failed reign of Julian by returning to the policies of Constantius II and Constantine the Great. Jovian's general strategies were directed to get the Roman empire on its feet again militarily, administratively and religiously after the failed reign of his predecessor Julian (361-363) as well as to establish more peaceful relations with the Sasanid empire. The late antique and early medieval Mediterranean was characterized by wide-ranging cultural and linguistic diversity. Yet, under the influence of Christianity, communities in the Mediterranean world were bound together by common concepts of good rulership, which were also shaped by Greco-Roman, Persian, Caucasian, and other traditions. This collection of essays examines ideas of good Christian rulership and the debates surrounding them in diverse cultures and linguistic communities. In Creation and Contemplation, Julien Decharneux explores the connections between the cosmology of the Qur’ān and various cosmological traditions of Late Antiquity, with a focus on Syriac Christianity. The first part of the book studies how, in exhorting its audience to contemplate the world, the Qur’ān carries on a tradition of natural contemplation that had developed throughout Late Antiquity in the Christian world. In this regard, the analysis suggests particularly striking connections with the mystical and ascetic literature of the Church of the East, which was in effervescence at the time of the emergence of Islam. The second part argues that the Qur’ānic cosmological discourse is built so as to serve the overarching theological message of the text, namely God’s absolute unity. In The Semantics of Qurʾanic Language: al-Āḫira, Ghassan el Masri offers a semantic study of the concept al-āḫira ‘the End’ in the Qurʾān. The study is prefaced with a detailed account of the late antique concept of etymologia (Semantic Etymology). In his work, he demonstrates the necessity of this concept for appreciating the Qurʾān’s rhetorical strategies for claiming discursive authority in the Abrahamic theological tradition. The author applies the etymological tool to his investigation of the theological significance of al-āḫira, and concludes that the concept is polysemous, and tolerates a large variety of interpretations. Written in 1893 by two women from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Unveiling a Parallel is a remarkable precursor of twentieth-century feminist utopian novels like Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Herland and Marge Piercy's Woman on the Edge of Time. Couched as sentimental romance and utopian fantasy, Jones and Merchant's work satirizes nineteenth-century gender roles and discrimination against women, humorously unveiling the absurdities of socially constructed "femaleness" and "maleness." Journeying to Mars, the novel's nameless male narrator discovers a society where women enjoy equality with men. He meets Elodia, a community leader, who drinks excessively, has lovers, and uses drugs. Her behavior confounds his expectations about women's supposedly pious and pure "natures" and reveals that equality, if rooted in a patriarchal culture, is not necessarily a utopian virtue. In contrast, a more perfect state of development has been reached in a second country on Mars, where the narrator learns how unselfishness, nurture, and mutual support can offer viable alternatives to passive, chaste femininity or to greedy, lustful masculinity. By imagining a better world in women's terms and in women's language, Jones and Merchant still speak with vital insight to both women and men today.
