Introduction : La douleur du travail se situe parmi l'une des plus douloureuses qu'une femme puisse vivre. L'exploration du vécu de cette douleur est essentielle car elle est un défi physique et psychologique pour les femmes et les couples. Méthode : L'objectif de l'étude était d'explorer le vécu et la prise en charge de la douleur du travail obstétrical. Une étude de type qualitative à visée descriptive et interprétative a été réalisée dans une maternité de type I de la région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Neuf femmes ont été interrogées au cours du séjour en post-partum grâce à des entretiens semi-directifs. Résultats : Les femmes ont une représentation prénatale de la douleur issue d'une transmission orale et de leur expérience personnelle antérieure. Les parturientes ont eu un vécu satisfaisant grâce à la préparation anténatale et aux méthodes d'accompagnements fournies par les sages-femmes. La présence d'une personne de confiance est apparue comme essentielle pour un vécu satisfaisant de la douleur. Discussion : Les différentes approches concernant les attentes et la gestion de la douleur explorées dans la littérature ont également été retrouvées dans cette étude. D'autre part, de plus amples recherches au sujet de l'influence de la parité, l'âge et l'approche culturelle sur le vécu de la douleur seraient intéressantes à mener. Conclusion : La préparation anténatale, le soutien des sages-femmes et des personnes accompagnantes participent au vécu satisfaisant de la douleur du travail. Toutefois, la prévention de la souffrance psychologique apparaît fondamentale à la suite d'un vécu difficile de la douleur du travail.
