Book Description
Cottonseed is an important by-product of the cotton industry. Its value as feeds for lactating cows centers around its good balance in nutrient contents and a fairly high concentration of energy in its oil. In a feeding trial involving 36 lactating Friesian cows, three levels of cottonseed were studied along with three sources of roughage and two levels of calcium for their effects on intake, milk yield and composition. Across roughages and calcium levels, dry matter intake of diets decreased linearly with increasing levels of cottonseed. Milk yield and percents milk fat and protein were reduced at the higher level of cottonseed inclusion. Reduced milk fat percent was probably due to adverse effect of fat on fiber digestibility. Calcium in the form of limestone was ineffective in correcting the problem of reduced milk fat. [Author's abstract].
